Not sure if that would be helpful, seeing as how DVD Profiler uses 10-digit UPC #s, whereas DVDSpot utilizes all 12 digits (including the very first and very last digit).

Will these sites that use scripts eventually be required to remove all that data? I know that using them to get info from IMDb is illegal for commercial purposes and something they say they will pursue in their fair uses section. That a site has to purchase it or atleast contact them in regards to any automated process of duplicating it as is.

I do know that collectorz has some arrangement with Amazon, DVD Empire and IMDB that allows users of their software to download images and data. Don't know if it's on a fee basis or not. When I first got the programs could acccess All Movie and All Music Guide but the AMGs discontinued allowing it. The developers are creating their own databases for users to access, my guess is to get away from dependence on these other sites.

One issue I have with Amazon is the changes they've made to how cover art is displayed. They often display "3D" views of box art, and although I realize that studios are supplying those to them because it's harder to use them for bootleg DVD covers, it completely defeats the purpose of downloading the images in programs like Delicious Library. With the artwork they do show as a flat straight-on image, they have that stupid white space around it. Why make that stuff part of the image? No matter what the size and shape of an image, you can center it within a given space, so there's no need to turn a rectangular DVD cover into a big square where half of it is white space. It really messes with programs that expect the image to be cover art and nothing else, especially Delicious Library, which displays whatever image it finds as if it were inside the graphics sleeve of a DVD keepcase. Having to crop those images one at a time so they'll look right is almost as much work as scanning the covers yourself.

Amazon also sucks for WB titles, has disc sticking out of cover. Also pictures sets unfolded or from an angle. I use DVD Empire which has good hi res cover scans but "copyrighted material" watermark on them. You can save the covers from DVD Empire to my pictures and then import them into whatever you are doing.

I don't have a scanner so what bugs me is not being able to add the dvd cover images of titles exclusive to box sets. I list individual movies in my database not the box sets.

Is there a way to organize my films by director in DVD Aficianado, or in another application/web site?

Don't want to go through and type in the director's name that way- since Director, along with Studio, is already known by DVD Aficianado, I just want it to sort by director without me having to pick which directors I want to see how many films I have by and typing their names in manually. Basically, I want it to list the directors and how many dvds I have by each one, in descending order, if that makes any sense. I want a list like the ones that break up my dvds by genre.
Instead of:

Action Adventure (42)
Animation (32)
etc

I want:

Alfred Hitchcock (22)
Martin Scorsese (15)
etc, all they way through to the directors I have only 1 film by. Is this possible, with Delicious Mac or whatever it's called, or another program? I'd like to have it organize by year as well.

I started this thread 6 months ago, and I still haven't decided what to do yet!

Just lazy and keep putting it off.

However, after sifting through the results so far, it looks like Movie Collectorz is a good way to go, in addition to DVD Profiler and DVDSpot.

So I guess I'll get down to work on those 3.

BTW, I was planning to mass import most of my DVD titles by copying and pasting from my DeepDiscountDVD orders over the years. But it seems that most people use the UPC code method.

I hate to drag all my DVD's up to my computer to do this, but would it be faster than trying to use the mass import method?

If you've taken this long to get back, time doesn't really matter, and you are no longer looking for the best.

I used the "cue cat" scanner initially for mine, but again that's bar code. So it applies to programs that support that (i recommend DVDProfiler)

I just bought Movie Collectorz and started typing in UPC codes by hand. It's going a lot fast than I expected.

I know a lot of people like DVD Profiler, but the fact that they are not updating the software scares me, while Collectorz is a well established company that is obviously putting a lot of money into developing and improving their product.

You can also use a barcode scanner too, if you have lots of titles. Or use the Add Movies Automatically function to add a bunch at a time.

I'm having trouble organizing movies in the proper order. I can't get the "Alien" series in the right order. It's listed as Alien, Alien3, Alien Resurrection, and Aliens. How does the catalog feature make them go in the right order? I put the number 1 in Alien, #2 in Aliens, and so on. I also literally put Alien 1 under Alien, etc. It still doesn't sort them in the correct order. I'm probably doing something wrong. Can anyone help?

I'm assuming you're talking about DVD Profiler. You'll want to double-click each title and edit the SORT titles - not the regular title. Just edit them as "Alien 1, Alien 2, Alien 3, Alien 4" and it should work fine.

I am also trying to find a program to inventory the dvd's at work (1500+).
The collection is currently in binders and sorted by a number.

We have guests every day and need to have weekly updated lists, as we add aprox 30 movies per month to the inventory.

I would like suggestions PLEASE on how to physically sort the dvd's so they correlate with the list, are quickly found, inventory easily added to and lists quickly reprinted.

Most important is how I will organize the DVD's.

I have a mac and am looking at delicious monster 2, dvd profiler, collectorz, and dvd pedia. None of them seem to offer a solution to how I should get organized...

For those of you who use Delicious Library I have a question. Is there any way to change the alphabetical setup? Meaning the way my titles show up on the shelves are out of order. I have 7 seasons of 24 and most of them are together but then random titles are on different shelves. I tried changing the titles of them so they are basically the same (aside from the number of the season) and they don't move or anything.

Collectorz has a location field, which I use on the discs I keep in binders. It's really more up to you on how you're going to organize something and then you translate that into your collection software. It can't really tell you where to put your stuff.

For reference, I add about 500 movies to my collection every 3 months and I'm using around 30 large binders as well as a bunch of shelves. When I enter movies into my collection, I have the default location set to whatever binder I'm currently filling up, unless the movie is going on a shelf, in which case I adjust the location field.

Profiler does something similar with two fields available to determine location information. I've got three cases that hold 900 discs each, so I'll use one field for case number and the second field for sleeve number within that case. Then I filter the collection based on case number to generate the report for that given case. One of the nice things is that these fields are available on a per-disc basis, so I can assign a location for each individual disc of a multi-disc set. Frankly I don't really bother with shelf information as I can simply look at the shelf, although that's an option as well.
