Who says this is even Peterson's call? When Spiderman 2.5 was announced, Raimi said he didn't have anything he wanted to put back into the film, but the studio wanted an extended cut, so they started to make one. When Bad Santa was released on DVD, an unrated "Bader Santa" cut was made, but it wasn't the Director's Cut of the film, which comes out this year.

This could be a case of the studio seeing an economic advantage of creating an extended cut of the film, and Peterson simply not objecting.
