Poseidon : Extended Version

From DAVISDVD.COM

It seems that the HD DVD version of POSEIDON will include both the 98 minutes theatrical cut and the 125 minutes extended version specially prepared by director Wolfgang Petersen. It will also include a audio commentary by Wolfgang Petersen and Actor Josh Lucas on the theatrical cut also. The HD DVD release is to be released on December 5th.

This should be in the HD forum.

Maxflier 09-18-06 02:54 PM

Awesome news thanks, looking forward to the HD DVD.

critterdvd 09-18-06 03:09 PM

Wow... I'm glad I didn't purchase the original DVD!

Eddie W 09-18-06 03:18 PM

Wonder if they're also going to release the extended version as an SD DVD? Or will this be an HD DVD exclusive?

dcprules 09-18-06 05:15 PM

I actually just watched this movie this past weekend and thought it was mediocre(great effects and awesome audio), but the movie was kinda blah and really (I mean REALLY) predictable. I might check out this extended edition, though, when I get an HD player.

Big Worms 09-18-06 05:31 PM

Sweet! I new there was a reason I was holding out for HD. :)

mdc3000 09-18-06 05:54 PM

That must be why the release date was so far back from the SD version... hopefully by December I'll have an HD-DVD player...I'll pick this up along with some of the other excellent titles that have been announced lately.

You can't cross-post on this board. The HD Talk thread is a completely separate thread, or a multi-post.

It wasn't when he first posted it. ;)

If this is going to be a trend going forward, it looks like I'll be buying an HD player earlier than I anticipated. :)

I never saw the flick, but I'm curious about the extended version on HD-DVD. Especially if it has more footage of Johnny Drama.;)

purplechoe 09-19-06 03:29 PM

I don't like to thread crap ...

mod note: then don't do it ;)

As a fan of Johnny Drama myself, I would recommend you skip it... :)

It can't be any worse than watching an episode of Viking Quest.

Frankly, as someone who won't be adopting a HD format until this time next year at the earliest, I'm pissed at this exclusive release!

so am I - harumph!

This film was in dire need of a directors cut and added character footage. At least 30 minutes is required. There was not reason to root for anyone on this ship, you knew nothing about them

Petersen has said in some interviews that he didn't want (or for whatever reason) any character developement stuff in the beginning of the movie.

Found a few websites that refer to the cut stuff:

From http://www.pittnews.com/media/storag...1997576.shtml:

Petersen apparently cut out a large portion of the beginning of "Poseidon" late in the editing process, stripping away crucial character development. So the idea was that we would come to know the characters via their actions
From http://www.indielondon.co.uk/Film-Re...sen-interview:

We didn’t want to go with the old fashioned way of character arcs and back stories for the characters – we wanted to do this as realistically as a situation like this would be. There are 10 or 12 people who don’t know each other thrown together in an unbelievably urgent situation and have to try to survive and get out of it. If they were to sit down and have a talk about who there were, it wouldn’t be real and audiences wouldn’t buy that.
I haven't seen the film but I think that a film like this won't work without at least some character developement. And based on the reviews I've read there is zero character developement in the theatrical version.

If Petersen cut the footage out and it's now being put back in, I'm wondering whose cut the extended version will be? Did Petersen change his mind, was he originally forced to cut the footage or will this new cut be just an extended version and not a director's cut?

Whatever the case may be, I'm interested in a longer version which hopefully will find it's way to a standard dvd as well.

My guess is it is a revisionist extended cut; the director's cut is what was in theaters, but apparently Peterson isn't too prideful to admit when he made a bad call.
