Pioneer players were released in quality tiers, with the CLD-D70x players at the top of the food chain and the CLD-D1xx and CLD-D2xx at the bottom. A CLD-D701 from 1992 would probably be a better player than a CLD-D406 from 1995, for example.
My first was the CLD-S201 which was a bottom line player. It's picture is MUCH better than the CLD-S505 (i think). It's a dual-sided player. I always thought it looked too dark and had a lot of noise. Then I hooked up my old player to the same tv and saw the difference.

The S201 was my first LD player. It was a real piece of crap. The picture was noisy as hell, with no DNR controls at all. Single-side play, no S-video, no digital audio output, no AC-3 RF output, no nothing. A player like the 704 utterly pisses all over it.

You haven't seen anything even remotely like decent LD playback with either of your machines.

Yes, a CLD-704 gives you a hit off what LD can do. I maybe will get one to my setup too, but I would hardly use it I guess. Too big step down from the Xx.

Josh, any luck with your X9 problem?

Only if you get a really good deal of a high-end combo from japan, otherwise, stay away from them.

So the 704 is it?!? That's the only "decent" one out there?

Poor for LD playback and utterly terrible for DVD playback.

For its usual ~$200 selling price, it's by far the best bang-for-your-buck out there. If you don't need the RF output, the CLD-D703 is the same player otherwise.
