I enjoy this quote: "People should not be allowed to view a movie any way they want."
THAT is the valid reason given for him being against the pause button.
I'm currently working on making backup copies of my entire collection and saving them as one continuous track so I won't be able to select a scene at will. I have also thrown out my remote controls. I have also spilled soda and melted butter on my carpet and have hired some people to come in and talk on cell phones and try to get their baby to stop crying. In this way, I can recreate the way I saw the movies in the theater.
New question: What if the power goes out while you're watching a movie? Do you start over when the power comes back on?

You have to understand that making DVDs is a commercial business. Scene selections are there because people want them. If there were a market for DVDs with no scene selections, studios would provide them.
Besides, what's keeping you from ignoring the chapters in your home? Other people can enjoy the movie in their own way, and you can frolic in pure artistic sensibility.

"I'm sorry honey, I know I promised you we'd out out for our anniversary tonight, but I just started watching The Lost World: Jurassic Park, and well, you know how pissy Spielberg can get when he finds out that I've paused his movies. We can go out tomorrow night, okay? Honey?"

I don't think that phrase is in the OP's vocabulary.
