Yeah, I'd like to know the answer to that as well. Whatever it is, I would imagine it is intact on the original release. Could be wrong, though.

I found this on IMDb:

On all of the post-"21st Anniversary Edition" all of the film has been cleaned up considerably from the original to give a much clearer picture, also some "waste-of-time"s have been removed completely; Most noticable of this is: Before King Arthur looks up to speak to the French soldiers he looks to the left and says, (Very quietly, possibly muted in the fnal dub), what's the next line? and a person off camera tells him the line, as they are telling him you can see him moving his lips to help him prompt himself. This only happens for about 2 seconds, but happens every time that King Arthur looks up to reply or speak to the French soldiers at the Castle.

I still haven't picked up this movie. Maybe the current version will be a bit cheaper when the new one comes out.

Isn't it in the "Gallahad" scene in the castle when Zoot says "Oh I AM enjoying this scene!" and everyone tells her to get on with it?

Zoot: Do you think this scene should have been cut? We were so worried when the boys were writing it. But its better than some of the previous scenes I think.
3 Heads: Ours was funnier.
Peasants: At least ours was committed and not just a string of pussy jokes. Get on with it!
Crowd: Yes! Get on with it!

No, that's the scene that's included in the SE DVDs. ThatGuamGuy suggested that something has been cut out of the film on the SE DVDs.

Actually, this sounds like confusion over what was actually in the original cut. On the Life of Python DVD, about a half-hour in, Eric Idle relates this same story of Chapman needing prompting after each line (although he states that Chapman either asked "yes?" or simply looked off camera too the prompter). However, he states that you'd only see this if you looked at the outtakes for the film, and that they heavily edited such scenes so that it didn't appear in the final film.

I just looked at the SE DVD as well, specifically the first French solider scene, and there's a few shots where Arther looks to the left before delivering his lines. So these could be the line prompt looks that were supposidly cut out, or at least more of were supposidly cut out. However, most of the cast do look around at either each other, or just elsewhere in general, as a sign of confusion over the eccentric response from the French soldier. Also, the Life of Python disc has clips of the scene from an older, lesser quality FS transfer, and the editing looks identical to that found on the SE DVD of the film.

All-in-all, I'm not convinced something was cut, especially considering that the person remembering the alleged cuts can't remember if Chapman's lines were quiet or completely muted. It seems like he's working from memory, which can be unreliable.

I'll check both releases against each other, but I agree, I think this is memory failing. It's also quite possible that they're remembering something they've seen in the documentary footage on the SE release, or another Python documentary. I do remember seeing Graham switch his lines around (i.e. "I am Arthur, defeater of the Saxons, King of the Britons" instead of "I am Arthur, King of the Britons, defeater of the Saxons", although I don't think that's the line in question), but it was only in documentary footage.

It would be nice if the "EDE" corrected the REAL "fault in the subtitles", but I wouldn't count on it. I doubt I'll be getting rid of my original DVD any time soon.

A PC CD-Rom game from 1997, or so, called "Monty Python and the Quest for the Holy Grail" contains many clips and outtakes from the film. Links between game levels contain Graham Chapman's outtakes, such as:

GC- "Where may we find this tave, oh Kim! Oh, Damn!"
GC- "I seek the grail!"
JC- paraphrasing, "Don't interrupt the performance!"
EI - "Do you think we have enough smoke in the shot?"

Plus, there are alternate audio takes of dialogue, including a nearly full scene where GC taunts the old woman using the word "Ni!"

As far back as the CED release of Holy Grail, I've never seen any of the aforementioned material in the film.

That quote from the IMDb is just flat out wrong... I never saw this theatrically, but I've seen it dozens of times during the past two decades in all formats (VHS, LD, all DVD versions) and that stuff with Graham asking for his lines has never been there. Sounds like confusion/faulty memory to me.

I only asked because I've read interviews where Terry Gilliam says that they cut that stuff out when cleaning up the film for the anniversary edition.

I'll try to track that quote down.

I have a commercially released VHS version of the movie from back before DVD. I took a look at the scene just now, and while you see Graham turn his head from the side up to where the Frenchman is every time the camera cuts back to him for his dialogue (like Jay G. said), there is no additional dialogue.

Graham probably was getting his lines off-screen, but it seems more like Arthur and the rest of the Knights are just confused by the Frenchman.

*EDIT*

Okay, I looked at the scene on the SE DVD as well. To my eyes, they're exactly the same.

To address a few points, first, it's only a rip-off if you're duped into buying it, so as long as one of the Pythons isn't behind all this "it has some great drunk Graham bits put back in" stuff, I don't think it qualifies. Also, interestingly enough, the CED version of this film actually had the "missing 24 seconds", so why it took almost 20 years to resurface is a mystery. Better without it, I say. The CED was the first home video format to offer widescreen, and this was only the second widescreen CED, making it the second widescreen home video transfer ever offered. It was also one of the relatively few VHS titles offered in widescreen. For further details on the "Holy Grail" CED, check out the link below:

http://www.cedmagic.com/featured/mon...hon-grail.html

Anyway, regarding the "drunk Graham" stuff, yes, he did have to look off-camera for just about every line, and I'm sure the looking around you see is due to that. It conveniently reads as startled confusion, and it's possible the others started looking around as well to make it less obvious (or perhaps they were genuinely playing startled confusion). Of course another possibility is that anyone else looking off was looking at one of the directors thinking, "Do we really have to put up with this?" We may never know, but the chances of any of this making it into the film are extremely slim. Anyone who was on the set or familiar with Graham's work habits would be wary of this. It would probably also be obvious to any editor with his eyes open.

It does occur to me that instead of this f@%$ing third re-release of "Holy Grail", we could really use the damn Director's Cut of "Erik The Viking" we were promised, or at least the Deluxe Edition of "Wanda" for Pete's sake!!! Apparently "Pirates of the Carribean: Johnny Depp's Wearing Mascara Again" got "Yellowbeard" released (albeit looking like it was recorded on a standalone DVD burner), maybe we should bribe Mr. Depp's agent to sign him up to play John Cleese in "The John Cleese Story" (maybe he could use lifts in his shoes) and maybe then we'll get the transfers THAT ARE APPARENTLY ALREADY DONE replicated and released on DVD.

It's worse than I thought. I was re-reading my post and noticed I should have said "third release" instead of "third re-release", but I immediately realized that it's actually the FIFTH release of this thing!!!

1) original DVD release
2) SE release
3) deluxe box with book & film cel
4) three-movie set in slimcases
5) Extraordinarily Tiresome Re-issued Ad Nauseum Edition

Jesus jumped-up Christ!

I believe several UK tapes have had it included. It's mainly in the US that it hasn't been included on video releases.

I'd love to see Spamalot. Sounds great fun

The Holy Grail Lego feature on the SE (where they do the Knights of the round Table song with lego characters) is a crack up.

How does this release differ from the previous one? Is it the same with the addition of the Spamalot feature and the "soundtrack" cd? Anything missing from this one that's on the previous release?

It's supposed to have a new (better) transfer, along with sub-title fixes.

Oh, and here's a fairly thorough review of the new set:
