Yeah, so I can go back to the day I purchased the last release and skip it.

? Why. Is the CD soundtrack that crucial? Otherwise, it's identical. It looks like this release is the one that's skippable.

I used the search fuction to look for that post (which was also started by me) and for some damn reason it didn't appear.

Well if the CD is an actual Soundtrack, then I could reconsider buying this.
But if it's The Album Of The Soundtrack Of The Trailer Of The Film Of Monty Python And The Holy Grail then this truly is a another rip-off.

It looks like its just the previous SE with the soundtrack? Meh, I won't bother. The R2 UK 2 disc is fine for me :)

Did they ever fix the joke subtitles during the opening credits? If not, and they have fixed them here, then I might be tempted.

What was wrong with them? :confused: Do you mean the pidgin English/Swedish ones (a moose once bit my sister etc).

Ah. I'm not sure. Those subs were burnt on the print I'm sure (or looked it). Maybe you mean the "We apologise for the fault in the subtitles" gags which looked player generated.

I believe that only the first subtitle, "Monti Python ik din Holie Grailen" (possibly spelled differently, certainly including assorted umlauts and such), was missing.

Exactly. As far as I can tell, that was the only problem, except of course that the newly-recorded stereo narration track is annoying in that Michael's inflections are different from what we all rememember. A minor point, but that's one reason I still have the original DVD release. It has the proper subtitles, but the picture isn't as clean and there's some film weave. It also doesn't include the "missing 24 seconds", but I usually prefer to watch the film as I've seen it for years, but of course in widescreen. If I want to hear the commentaries or check out the bonus material, I pop in the Special Edition.

Incidentally, if anyone else is as dissatisfied with the SE as I am and would like to have the original DVD version, you can most likely still find it at WAL-MART for $13.72 as I recall.

I doubt it. When the three-movie boxed set came out (which didn't even include three Python movies, thereby rendering the box useless to me since I file "Munchausen" separately from the Python films) they started using old stock of Disc 1 from the SE, then when they actually started pressing new discs that didn't have the confusing "Disc 1" label, you could find that disc in newer packages of the SE, especially when it was blown out at $7.50 or something. So if you bought the three-movie set, you'd sometimes have a slimline case with only one disc that was labeled "Disc 1", or you'd buy the 2-disc SE and have one disc with no "Disc 1" on the label, but the second disc still said "Disc 2". Not only that, since the artwork was re-done for the single-disc release, if you got an SE set like that, the two disc labels didn't even match!

Back to the subtitles issue, I had hoped that would have been rectified when they produced new discs for the three-movie set, but no. Like I said, they either just used Disc 1 from an SE set, or when it was a newly-pressed disc, it was done from the same glass master. Pathetic, really.

It would be great to rent one of these sets and see exactly what's in it, but that probably won't be possible. If the soundtrack that's included is the out-of-print "Python Masters" CD, that might make it worth another "dip", but it probably won't include the booklet, which was the best part of those CDs. It would of course also be worth getting if they finally did include the missing first subtitle, though.

Should the film have a Mono track?
The R2 SE (that I have) has 5.1 and DD Surround tracks.

The Mono track is the original soundtrack for the film that has been heard for years.

For the 5.1 remix, some of the original audio elements either didn't exist or were damaged beyone repair. As a result, they decided to add in some new backround noises and re-recorded Micheal Palin's narration. I'd imagine the DD 2.0 Surround track is a downmixed version of the 5.1 track.

Woah. I had no idea the proper cut was available.

The *only* thing I like about the "missing 24 seconds" is that the "Get on with it" joke that follows actually makes sense. But it really grinds the film to a (brief) halt for me, so I may have to track down that old cut, now that I know it's out there.

Does this mean that Graham Chapman's performance is uncut on that disc as well?
