Actually, Maria debuted in 1971. Her first episode is actually on Disc 2 of this box set where she introduces herself to Big Bird.

The corridor song is "Alphaquest" I think - I think it debuted in the 80's but not sure.
"A New Way To Walk" is also 80's I'm sure, because the set up is one of various MTV spoofs (MTV started in 1981), the group "Oinker Sisters" is obviously a take on The Pointer Sisters.
shame the excellent sketches like "The Letter N" song and "Wet Paint" won't be there

I believe Mr. Hooper's death was in 1984. More specifically, it aired around Thanksgiving week that year, IIRC.

EDIT: oK, the IMDB has it listed as '83. uhhh, I was in 8th grade . . .

I am personally hoping for an old school volume two 1975-1979, instead of season sets. Anyone here knows that season sets of sesame street just isn't possible due to the number of episodes in a season and legal clearances. I think this set was a great formula to follow (five keys episodes, followed by classic skit complitations). I just hope we get more next time, but it will probably be another year from this release.

There's only more than 4,134 episodes (according to Wiki). Roughly 114 episodes a "season". Should be no problem.

Seriously, I guess i'm greedy but I want more than 5 episodes. And that above figure includes when it became "Elmo Street"...so we can subtract that.

Perhaps an "on demand"/special order/Time-Life thing? Maybe?

So many of the puppet and animated skits get repeated over and over again within a season though. Within and EPISODE even. Witness WANDA THE WITCH, which recurs twice for some reason in the same season premiere. I'm more interested in the strange, psychedelic animated sequences than the live action sections, so these compilation boxes are fine with me!

This was explained in the original pitch, I believe. It's for the sake of young children, who like to see the same thing over and over (you don't have kids, do you ? ). It pre-dates the Teletubbies... "again! again!".

I also agree that just a few landmark episodes plus a compilation of classic bits is a great way to do this. This show was simply not designed to be watched one episode after another, and I think a lot of TV season sets suffer when you cram all the episodes together and they're back-to-back-to-back.

Wondering if this had a booklet/insert? And if it had a sleeve to put the case into with the UPC and such pictured below on the back...or was it just a toss away paper. i found a used copy at a fair price, but it looked like it was missing a slip, as the back just had a picture of the set.

Yes, it has a really thick booklet. Mostly kid's activities, but some historic details for adults. The picture you posted is the front and back of the outer slipcover, not a throwaway. ...well, it was for somebody

I'll definitely get this, so we can avoid showing the ADHD modern Sesame St. to our daughter. But I really hope they put out a similar set for about 77-83, when I watched it.

By the way, has anyone seen the 20th Anniversary special (I think it was 1989...)? Is that available anywhere? Where they interview the grown-up girl who did the Cookie Monster alphabet (I think)-- a, b,c, d, e, f, COOKIE MONSTER!! Cutest thing I've ever seen in my life.

$40 is a lot for nostalgia, but I may end up pulling the trigger. Especially if these sets have the following:

-Grover as the waiter, serving the muppet that makes noises with his mouth. "Waiter, I'll have a BEEP-BEEP and a side of HONK HONK."

-"1,2,3,4,5..............6,7,8,9,10,.....11, Tweeee......EEEEE....EEEELVE!!"

-The baker on the top stairs: "12....birthday......cakes......::falls down the stairs::...
(This one cracks me up for some strange reason).

Although Joey (the little girl) looked young, she was actually more than twice the age of the average viewer, and was close to 10 years old (9/10) when she left the show.

You mean Simon Soundman? (Thats the guy who makes noises). Sometimes even as I got older, I didn't get what his "sounds" were meant to mean.

At least one of the "baker falling down the stairs" skits is on the DVD set. I don't think it's when he has 12 cakes, though - it's a lower number. Still, same gag, still funny.

I've only skimmed through my set so far, so I don't remember if the other two skits were on there. But lots of classic skits that you probably won't remember until you see them are included. (For instance, I'd forgotten about "the mad painter" - the guy who goes around painting numbers on every thing - until I saw one of the skits again.) The set has a high nostalgia value, you probably won't be sorry if you get it.

picked this up earlier in the week. it had a security sticker on the top of the cardboard slip, that pulled off a lot of the artwork color. Did this happen to everyone, or did i get a funky copy?

Mine had it on the outside of the shrinkwrap (so I cut it out and saved it.)
