I have a separate area for TV, and it is divided into two alpha sections: shows that are/were regularly scheduled series (All In The Family ---> X-Files) and shows that were mini-series or stand-alone series (Angels In America ----> V).

They're mostly alphabetical and seperate from my movies. The main exception is Stargate: SG-1 which would just take up too much shelf space.

I do the same with series sets. TV movies/miniseries/docs are mixed in with movies, which are also organized alphabetically.

No matter how you do it, some title is gonna come along and screw it up. I don't think I've ever been anal enough to put ANYTHING in strict alphabetical, but of course the good old ABCs can be of help within categories.

To answer the question, I have a system that is probably waaay too complicated, but it works for me. Someone mentioned SNL, and for me, that stuff wouldn't be in my TV category at all. With so many movies starring SNL alumni, I have a completely separate subcategory under Comedy for SNL, including all the best-ofs (that I care to own) and any movies I'm interested in, all sorted in the order in which the stars joined the cast (i.e., Dan Aykroyd before Eddie Murphy, which also works out alphabetically). For sitcoms and things that don't fit anywhere else, they're in chronological order within the TV category. For shows like The Simpsons, that stuff is under Animation, and shows like Airwolf and Knight Rider are under Science Fiction. It might seem a little weird, but once the Blue Thunder series is released, it can be kept with the movie.

Someone mentioned binders, and I do intend to create custom binders for any series I have the entire run of, like Knight Rider, Seinfeld (well, not yet) and others. Even shows like Friends where I'm just gonna pick and choose will probably get their own binders as well. That should leave very few sets left sitting on the shelf, and ultimately any series that doesn't get its own binder will be put into a binder with other stuff. Space is just too limited for me, unfortunately.

Shelf, eh? I know not this "shelf" you speak of. All DVD's in a vat of creamed corn for me.

I've had mine seperated from movies (but in the same area) since my first TV purchase (Simpson's Season One), but about 6 months later when 'Buffy,' 'Friends,' and 'Sex and the City' came along they got their own shelf... now they literally have their own half of a wall.

Another question, is if there is a movie based on a tv show or vice versa do you put them into your collection? For me I only do it is the movie is real sequel/prequel (example: Buffys are together as is Serenity/Firefly & Twin Peaks/FWWM; but the brady bunch and dukes of hazard are with the movies)

My answer is theoretical since I don't actually have any movies that correspond to a TV series that I own, but I would file the movies with my other movies, not their series'. That's just how my brain works; your way also makes a certain kind of sense.

I keep my TV boxsets together with my movie boxsets on a shelf. No real order, just togehter in season order, ie. Married With Children together, Sledge Hammer together etc.

I have them on two built-in shelves up at the top of my computer room. I have all the A & E stuff together (about 50 cases worth), then all the Drama/SF/Fantasy (similar series are next to each other, but probably I'm the only one the order would make sense to), and then on the second shelf Comedy then Animated.

I don't have that many, compared to some (about 40-50 total...) I keep them separate from movies, although when I get them, I plan to file all Star Trek together, and All Star Wars, etc.

Right now, the TV shows are Alpha by season or volume, with animation separate from live-action, but super-heroes (especially Superman, since I have 6 or 7 volumes now) will have their own section

I keep them in a cabinet area of the entertianment center seperate from movies.... they are stacked in there in order of necessity. The stuff I plan on watching soonest is near the front, and as soon as they are watched, they go to the back to wait to come back into the rotation.
