Someone over at DVDManiacs posted that this new "Ultimate Edition" is missing some sound effects and even some screaming by Marilyn Burns on both the 5.1 re-mix track as well as on the supposedly 'original' mono track. All of these sound effects were all present on the old Pioneer disc. A couple of other people afterwards have corroborated this information. So this week we had two horror classics (also "NOES") released as basically 'definitive' DVD editions from two different studios on the same exact day - but both of them are missing sound efx in the actual film! Sounds like these DVD producers are spending too much time focusing on extras and supplements instead of making damn sure the movie itself is presented 100% intact.

I asked about the audio problems I found with the disc here (post#205) but got no response so I had hoped there was a problem with my set-up somehow. Sadly it seems this is not the case - perhaps this should be TCM - The Penultimate Edition..?

Neither one of you are "partially" correct.

The Book of the Dead Edition was replaced with a keepcase but within a very limited issue (this is the one being rented out exclusively at Blockbuster Corporate Stores)

While the one that you are mentioning Joliom is the "neon green" THX release of Evil Dead One (which does not come with additional special features that is with the BOTD edition)

I totally agree...

But for us here in the US, we should be honored to have such release (even with some shortcomings) compare to those who were impatient and bought the UK R2 Release years back just to say they have the full version (even if its running under PAL system format)

It is abundantly clear that a great deal of love, affection and respect went into the creation of the Ultimate Edition, enough to make me believe it's more likely that the "missing" sounds were added after the theatrical run, in the home video environment, than removed from this latest release.

I didn't notice any missing audio, I was too blown away by how great the picture looked, for the first time ever.

Sally's screams missing on both of the stereo tracks is clearly an error any way you look at it - all the love, respect and attention can't change that fact. The mono track fares better - Sally's screams are still there, but they are still muffled compared to the older Pioneer release. The Kirk second hammer hit effect is missing on the mono track on this new disc as are the sounds of Sally hitting the tree and ground after jumping out the window. No sound at all as she goes through the tree and hits the ground! These sound efx were all present in theatrical prints (at least they were in the 1981 theatrical re-issue where I saw it about 10 times). There may be other effects missing as well. I'm just verifying what others have already discovered on their own. Don't get me wrong, a couple of missing sound effects isn't the end of the world and the quality of the image looks great, but I'm definitely holding on to the old Pioneer release as well - the mono soundtrack is much clearer overall.

I find it interesting that the back of the case of this new "Ultimate Edition" indicates "Digitally Remastered Original Mono Soundtrack". That may be where the problem originated. Too much tinkering going on.

I watched the movie and the first documentary, this afternoon, and I must say that I'm very impressed with this DVD release. The movie looks and sounds amazing, and the fact that a couple of sound effects are missing didn't even bother me. To be honest, I didn't even notice their absence.

The documentary is great, and I'm hoping the second one is just as good. I learned a lot about the movie that I hadn't known before. It was funny to hear that the director of the piece of shit, "Leatherface," wanted his name off of the movie.

Watched this over the weekend and compared it with my R2 UK version.

Although with Hi-Def slowly coming I'm limiting my upgrades, I'm very happy with this one - the picture is so much sharper than the R2. The less said about the old R1 the better.

I tried to check if anything from the R2 hadn't been included in this new disc. So far I've found various newspaper ads etc. in the stills gallery, and there is also about 6 minutes of mute footage of the house, showing Bob Burns' wonderfully creepy set decoration.

That's it so far, as I didn't have time to look more thoroughly. I'm sure someone else can chip in...

I bought this as a blind buy. I have the remake, but I always like to see the original to compare. And of course, the steelbook packaging just sweetened the deal.

So far, I've watched the film and the two documentaries. The movie looks absolutely amazing and it's easy to tell that they put a lot of time and effort into restoring it. It looks better than I ever thought it would. Also, the documentaries are both quite good, and are very informative.

I'm very glad that I bought this set.

I watched everything on the bonus disc and the documentaries were excellent. Not a lot of Ed Neil action on them-is he now boycotting anything to do with the film?

I seem to remember hearing something awhile back.

He's quite a character. I met him about ten years? ago at a convention w/TCM people. Talked with him for about an hour while he was selling movie posters.

Also talked with Gunnar a bit, Marilyn and Jim Siedow.

actually the old wizard video tape looks better than this, and one was EP mode.

the colors are way too bright. things look way too clear, and the house was scary by itself at one time.

this is good for the new fans i guess, and by looking at this thread, there appears to be many.

but i like the lines, splices, dirt, etc.- this release looks too clean.

and forget about directors or Cinematographers vision.

i have an original 16mm print, with bryanston titles-- and the film looks like pioneer release. not this dvd.

this is up there with Lucas messing with star wars.

no, i'm saying the new disc was not their vision,

no wait, i'm sorry, you're right

they intended on their film being high definition, anamorphic, and in stereo with Audio changed even from the original film track..

what was i thinking.

For all of your talk about "director's vision", I find this comment to be interesting. Do you feel that the director intended the film to look like a bad dup, with "lines, splices, dirt, etc."?

"high definition" and "anamorphic" in this context have absolutely nothing to do with how something was filmed or shown theatrically. In fact, they are both ways to be more faithful in home presentations to what was shown in theaters.
