I watched The Passion Of The Christ once on dvd. It's an incredible film that will always be better expereinced in the movie theater. For that reason alone, I don't think that I will ever double-dip on it. I will always remember when I first saw it in the theater. It was an expereince to remember. The dvd I own is enough for me, I haven't rewatched it after buying it months and months ago.
Perhaps Fox is holding off on a SE because they feel not enough buyers will consider a double dip. Or they just want to release it at a very appropriate time. |
One possibility is that it was such an emotional experience that Gibson is waiting for time to pass before reflecting on it. Wasn't that the reason why James Cameron waited on revisiting Titanic?

Does anyone know if it's even available in widescreen? And from what I could tell the DVD itself is exactly the same.

Yes, you are correct about the Limited Edition Passion sold only to selected Christian Stores. Below is the actual photo of the said "Christian Limited TIN" Edition Passion of the Christ http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...00/passion.jpg http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...0/passion2.jpg |
I'm pretty sure it was about $14.99

This is the PAL Limited Edition DVD also sold in Christian stores in the UK. It's a very nice piece created to hang up on the wall. It's a bit pricey at 45 pounds. |
There is a documentary and BTS of the movie called THE BIG QUESTION here

Return of the Christ :)
no word on when though ;) |
The Passion of the Christ: The Return of the Christ.
|
Yeah, it could come out as soon as today or as late as hundreds of years from now. They can't start production until after. The big downside is that it will have to be made by non-Christians so it will probably lose a lot of meaning.

The Passion of the Christ: The Return of the Christ |
The Passion of the Christ: The Return of the Christ: Ascension to Heaven Edition

When Jesus rose he went and visted his followers and spoke to them.
They could show that and flashbacks and the movie would end with Jesus accending towards heaven as it is written. And for part 3 just have the return. |

I just think The Passion is one film that speaks for itself. Extras would cheapen it. The only possible supplements I can think of being appropriate would be a commentary with theologians and historians and perhaps some sort of branching feature that notes the sources from the Bible during scenes. The PAX making-of has shots of Mel Gibson cheering up the cast with his clown nose gag, which I doubt would be appropriate for the DVD. |
Yeah, I'm happy with the current dvd, but the branching feature would be cool.

An Unrated edition is coming this Christmas! The full press release will be out on 06/06/06, but here are some quotes:
[t]he blockbuster extravaganza will be released in time for Christmas in a new unrated edition, with over 10 minutes of never before seen footage [...] featuring flashbacks that were too hot for theaters! [a] sneak peak at the stage version of the film! [a] hilarious blooper reel full of laugh-out-loud moments and crazy antics. See Christ drop from the cross! [o]ver 20 minutes of bonus deleted footage and three alternate endings! Feature film commentary with director Mel Gibson and Pope Benedict XVI [...] The interactive "Torture and Crucifiction Adventure" set-top game will allow children to learn more about the true story of The Passion of the Christ without the need for the cumbersome Bible! |

Jim Cavizeiel talked about his experiences making the film at a speaking I went to. The rig that had him on the cross took a while to take down, so he'd have to stay there until the next shot or take... between shots, someone would use a pole to hand him a portable CD player and headphones so he could pass the time listening to music. True story. |
