They've already been remastered and yes, there are plans to re-release them -- in High Definition. Lowry Digital Images has already done a complete restoration on at least Godfather 1 & 2 (not certain about 3), but Paramount is waiting for HD to release them again. Sadly, the restoration work was done BEFORE the boxset was originally released, so they actually could have released a much nicer set than they did.

And before anyone asks, I got my information about LDI doing the restoration from a lady at LDI directly.

Are you talking about the latest re-release of the boxset? I thought the original box set from 2001 was well before Lowry did their work.

Isn't part 2 split across 2 discs in the box set?

That's why I got the individual releases. Didn't want a movie split across 2 discs.

EDIT: Correction: The individual realease of part 2 is also split across 2 discs...

Uh, the individual release contains the exact same 2-disc split version of "The Godfather Part II" as the box set. "Part II" isn't available on a single disc, period.

I will,the remix sounds terrible!

A good example would be in part 2 when Pacino asks if it was a boy that his wife misscarried(or whatever). When he yells, listen to how horrible and phoney it sounds. You can tell it was ADRed and it just does not sound natural at all with a echo quality. Meanwhile in the original mono mix for that and the original film. The dialogue and all the other audio sounds natural.

The picture quality I do not understand what people are bitching about though. It looks good to my eyes. And seems the same as the restored print from the mid-90's. The audio on the other hand does not sound good at all remixed and the original audio tracks need to be included if they are ever rereleased!

I couldn't remember if it was or not... that's why I posted it so someone could confirm or refute it. There is conflicting info on that (for example Amazon lists it as having 1 disc, but I just confirmed mine has 2).

I remember holding off until the set was available individually since the price is too high for the box.

Maybe when they come out in HD I'll get the box then...

You're original post didn't seem to linger on getting a confirmation.

--------

On topic, I would tell anyone to get the set (I love all three films) - but you might as well go for the single releases and just rent the bonus disc.

You're right.... I was on the phone when I typed that up. I'm going to edit it (in case someone stops reading right there)...

The picture quality is sorely lacking, Julie. There is no restoration done on it at all, and if there was, that company needs to be fired and someone given a refund. There is lots of dirt in the print for the first two films, and lots and lots of digital noise that does not belong there. The opening scene from Godfather Part 2 looks as though Michael is being attacked by a swarm of mosquitos.

I believe everyone -- including me -- who complains about the picture quality of these films is simply saying that THESE films deserve much better treatment than they have received.

Depending on your t.v. set on how good the dvd will look.
I have watched it on a 40in. projection t.v. and a plasma 40in. and they still look bad.
So maybe in a 25in. or less t.v. screen the dvd looks good.

Don't worry about it. I understood what you were getting at. Just trying to get a needed laugh from myself.

Alright the prints look alright on my small screen. And the prints used on tv look the same as well.

Now does anyone agree with me on the bad quality of the remixed audio or am I the only one? The remix have completely ruined the films for me. That I've had to go watch the old mono VHS instead!
