Question: Godfather DVD Collection Vs. Single DVD's

I was just wondering if the DVD's that are in the Godfather DVD collection box set are the exact same as the single DVD's that are out. I'm wondering because I know that next week the single DVD's are going to be on sale at CC next week for $10, and I don't know if I want to get the single releases or get the box set because of the special features. Are the special features really worth it?

ZakiHasan 04-25-06 08:35 PM

The movie discs themselves are exactly the same, right down to the Coppola commentary tracks. That said, I personally feel the special features disc is worth owning. There are enough added features to make it worth getting the box set if you're a died-in-the-wood GODFATHER fanatic.

DeanoBKN 04-25-06 09:57 PM

I'd go for the box set. Cool box, and a good disc of bonus features.

paulringodaman 04-25-06 11:10 PM

And now you get a Godfather game demo!!!! (sarcasm)

In all honesty, go for the box set...it's a very sleak looking box

benh911 04-25-06 11:53 PM

Thanks guys. I probably will get the box set. All I know is with the single DVD's going on sale for $10, and the cheapest price on the box set being $50, that's a hell of a lot more to pay for the bonus disc.

MartinBlank 04-26-06 12:26 AM

The only thing that sucks about the box set is The Godfather Part III....the extra's disc is worth the price of admission.

Joe Molotov 04-26-06 12:30 AM

I bought the Godfather boxset a long time ago, and it was well worth it.

Zwerchfell 04-26-06 02:15 AM

I wouldn't buy at all the picture quality is just not good enough.

yellowbedwetter 04-26-06 02:56 AM

the bonus disc is worth it IMO. The documentary is really interesting and informative and details the making of the movies.

Billyspunk 04-26-06 05:01 AM

Also the bonus disk has the deleted scenes that they had in the chronological complete epic...BUY THE SET!

hardercore 04-26-06 05:33 AM

Well the fact that the films are 30-33 years old aside, the Godfather films are the type that you can look past picture quality and enjoy the quality of the film itself.

I'd buy the box set and see what you can fetch on ebay for the Part III which is an absolute joke and disgrace to such legendary first 2 parts

In the grand scheme of things, that's not very old. I've seen much older films that looked great on DVD ("Key Largo" off the top of my head). The French Connection, older, looks fantastic on DVD. I saw Apocalypse Now Redux at the cinema, a movie a few years newer, sure, but I was blown away by how good it looked. Why can't The Godfather look that good? We're not talking about a movie like "Hit!" (God bless Billy D.) or something. It IS considered one of the best American movies of all time, after all.

get the single releases of I & II, you'll save $30

Just for the record, the phrase is "dyed-in-the-wool".

As someone who watches extras no more than once and often not at all, I have no choice but to agree with Lunatikk's assessment above.

Corvin 04-26-06 09:01 AM

DDD has the boxset for $46. Assuming you're not in a hurry and are willing to wait for the next 20% off sale, that would make it about $36. If you don't pay any tax and you get free shipping, you're only paying about three dollars for the box and the bonus disc. Just thought I'd throw that out there as an option.

I'm in complete agreement. I personally would not want to own part 3 and you can always rent the bonus disc.

maxfisher 04-26-06 09:59 AM

If you've got a Sam Goody/Suncoast nearby, you might want to check if they're going out of business. The ones in Indy are closed now, but last week the Sam Goody had a ton of Godfather 1 & 2 at 70% off and I picked them both up for around $4 each.

This is just stupid to not buy a DVD because the transfer isn't just perfect. Buy it for the films themselves, not because the transfer, which is actually fine, isn't the best it could be. As far as I know, there are no plans to remaster these or rerelease them. This is no better than the people who won't buy a DVD because there aren't enough extras.

Tha Freak 04-26-06 10:47 AM

I'm stunned no one shitted on the audio track yet ? (sarcasm too)

And the boxset is available here in Montreal for 40$CAN (that's like 10$US rotfl )

Agreed. It would be one thing if a new set were announced, but being that this is the BEST way to view these films (albeit it is subpar), this set is still a must-own.

What are you on about? That's 35 USD.

^ Do this, rent the bonus disc and Part III (unless you REALLY want it) and wait for the next release. And, not yet mentioned, you get sturdy keepcases instead of that box design.

wm lopez 04-26-06 06:06 PM

Don't buy the boxset or the singles.
Wait for them to remaster and fix those crappy prints and every week I see the singles on sale for $10. Since the very begining of dvds whenever I have seen old hit movies on dvd with big price drops it's because they are trying to unload their inventory. Then they put out the remastered dvds.
So wait!!
