Psycho (1960) and Psycho IV: The Beginning (1990) DVDs?

Universal finally gave us decent DVD releases of Psycho II and Psycho III last September. Do you think they will follow up this fall with a DVD release of Psycho IV: The Beginning and a 16x9 enhanced release of the original? I know the original is already available with a 16x9 enhanced transfer in the Hitchcock Masterpiece Collection Box Set, but it should be available individually too. I caught Psycho IV playing on the Universal HD movie channel a few months ago and it looked great. The aspect ratio was either 1.78:1 or 1.85:1 and it featured more blood and violence than what is shown in the TV cuts. There was also some brief topless nudity from Olivia Hussey and the girl at the beginning of the film. I would love to have this edition on DVD. I always thought this film was made for TV (Showtime) and that the OAR was 1.33:1, but maybe it did play briefly in the theaters?

I own the original Psycho non-anamorphic dvd and the new anamorphic one in the Hitchcock set. The 16x9 disc does look better. It appeared to be cleaned up a bit and I didn't notice as much grain from the previous release. I haven't watched the old disc in awhile, but I did remember that was a very grainy release with lots of dirt on the print.

I have no doubt that they will eventually release these new discs individually. Psycho would be a good choice for a Halloween release this year.

They've all ready started releasing these individually. I can't remember which ones. I think Marine and The Trouble with Harry were two of them. But, i do remember reading about them and seeing them in the store.

Yep,they have released a few of the "Masterpiece Collection" versions of the films. So I'm sure Psycho and Vertigo will be out sooner or later.

Now regarding Psycho 4 and the mention of 'more blood' and 'some nudity' not in the 'tv version'. Are you just refering to the uncut R rated Showtime version, compared to the basic network edited tv version? Or are you saying this version is more explicit than the original Showtime R rated version?

Since while I know the film is not a blood fest or anything. I do recall some bits of explicit violence and brief nudity. Meanwhile all that material is cut out when on USA or Sci-Fi obviously.

Glad to see a few fans of Psycho IV. The film's a little silly, but I thought Anthony Perkins was just great in this one.

I have Psycho IV on laserdisc. It would be great to have a widescreen dvd of it. I know in other markets, there is a fullscreen dvd as part of a psycho set. I figured Universal would release the psycho set here eventually with all 4 movies. A few other extras would be good too on the sequels. I'm still unhappy with the covers they put on them though. The original artwork needs to stop being discarded by them.

I'd love to have part four.. a box would be great, but I recently got the first three, so I'm hoping for a solo release as well.

It had been so long since I had seen the original Showtime R rated edition that I had forgotten what was originally there, but wasn't now. After several years of seeing the film on channels like USA and Sci-Fi, I became accustomed to seeing it that way and never suspected anything was missing. Nothing seemed edited especially considering there was little or no profanity that needed to be dubbed and the movie was fairly tame anyway. Truth be told, the version that aired on Universal HD was most likely Showtime's original uncut broadcast, not some extended version. Sorry for the confusion.

I caught Psycho IV on INHD a few weeks ago. I am not sure which version it was, but I did enjoy it.

Well, here we are in July and still no announcement for these two titles. I figure that if Universal does release them it will probably be in September or October. IIRC, when parts 2 and 3 were released last year, on Sept. 13, the announcement came in early June. I'm getting worried that we might not get these after all. I want to complete my Anthony Perkins Psycho collection on DVD and I can't do that without a 16x9 enhanced Psycho and Psycho IV: The Beginning.

So the first Psycho is not available separately as 16x9 enhanced? I ordered it during the DDD 20% off sale. Did I buy a non-anamorphic DVD? (They list it as anamorphic, but I just checked DVD Empire and they do not state that it is.)

Also, since I have I-III, I was thinking about getting IV on laserdisc. There is no widescreen LD available, and I thought that was because the movie was shot for cable TV. So there actually is a widescreen version? Is it a matted version of the one that was seen on Showtime?

Well, it's obvious we're not getting these this year. They're not on the schedule for September or October and I doubt they'd release them in November or December. My guess is that we'll have to wait until Fall 2007 now.

What is wrong with Universal? They've released all of the Hitchcock Masterpiece titles individually except for Psycho and Vertigo, right? The two titles that probably most people wanted released individually and they won't give them to us. What the hell?

And I guess we're not ever going to get Psycho IV: The Beginning on DVD.
