Really crappy news!

That does it, I'm off to buy the R2 puzzle box set...I've resisted it's temptations too long.

It almost never fails. They release something that I went through a lot of trouble trying to find. At least they botched the US release again so I don't feel too bad:

Recently I was trying to round out my Hellraiser collection by trying to get HRIII used from Amazon. Took my chances with a well known merchant there and wouldn't you know it got a bootleg. It would only play in one of my players. So I contact them and got a replacement-- which doesn't play in any of my players. So I sent the replacement back (they sent the replacement with a return UPS label). I guess I'll sell/give away that copy.

So....

... about a week ago I ordered the R2 puzzle box set from Amazon UK and it came up to only ~$30.00 shipped. That's great for HR1-3 uncut plus bonus features (like a couple of Cliver Barker short films) that aren't even available in R1.

Best thing is it was only £14.46 (£17.54 shipped)!!!! I had been monitoring it for a few days and it was listed at about £24.00... I just checked and it is at £31.49 now.

I don't know why the price fluctuations, but I must've gotten really lucky. It's still worth it IMO, but £14.46 is unbelievable...

I'm waiting for an answer too - I have the US Anchor Bay Tin's so it'd be kind of redundant to buy the (UK) Puzzle Box since I and II are unrated in Region One.

So, wait... is the Canadian R-rated version, actually the unrated cut and anamorphic?

I just ordered the puzzle box new from Amazon.co.uk marketplace for 16.59 (plus 3.08 for shipping). That is the cheapest i found it for (that has international delivery).

It is still available at that price.

I could have got it cheaper used, but i don't trust buying this particular item used.

Your welcome Giles

I have the tin also, but the puzzle box looks nicer and has better extras. I'll just put my tin up for sale on e-bay.

not to go off on to much of a tangent - but I find it interesting that the Anchor Bay really underadvertised that the domestic R1 release is the unrated cut. Even though an actual MPAA rating is not on the tin, but that it is revealed in the disc's commentary track (and extended hammer death sequence). I would have also thought that the head pull sequence would have also been a rating's trim, but as it plays out, the scene is only extended in the unrated version of "Hellbound"... interesting...

Isn't it great how Paramount announces one of their upcoming crappy bare-bones edited releases and all that causes is to make everyone here go off to buy copies from another region instead. Way to go, Paramount! You'll sell a lot of these.

That's £16.59, right? Converted, roughly $35/shipped. You had my hopes up for a second, there.

Actually Hellraiser 1 is only semi-'uncut' in one sequence.the hammer sequence with the victim pleading, but Barker says the uncut version had even more hammer pounding, but the MPAA made him trim it down, though he admits the scene feels more violent now, than it did with the excessive amount of hits.

So HR1 is basically the R rated version with a couple seconds of the hammer victim pleading for his life.

I doubt the R2 release is 'more complete' than the R1 version. Since Barker mentions on the commentary how he doesn't know where all that extra footage is and thus it was not restored.

I did rent the old two tape VHS edition AB released years ago. And it did contain a trailer that showed in upclose fashion Franks head being split/peeled in half by the hooks. This is obviously not in the release prints of the film and Barker mentions how he's surprised the MPAA let him get away with the 'prolonged torture' of the charecter, while having to cut down on his actual demise, thus it appears 'truncated'. But again, the footage is lost and couldn't be located. So don't get your hopes up for a 'complete' version being released.

I don't remember Franks head pull being included in HR2 though. Is that what you were refering to?

Now I hope someone can help me out with the single HR3 UK release being uncut or not? I'm aware that a fullscreen cut version was previously available.

And the versions I see listed on ebay for dirt cheap all say fullscreen. But some claim to include the extras from the SE release.

I'd prefer to have an actual case for the dvd, since the puzzel box doesn't come with them. And since I already own 1 and 2. I don't really need the UK versions, though seeing more trailers and tv spots would be fun

yes, in the unrated Hellraiser II: Hellbound - the 'Jesus Wept'/head-body rip is replayed in 'Hellbound' with a tad bit more gore than is featured in the R-rated scene from Hellraiser I

From DvdManiacs regarding the Anchor Bay UK release:

Anchor Bay UK's new region two SE of Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth is very impressive and disappointing. The 1.85/16x9 image is in generally excellent condition, with bold colors, sharp detail and minimal speckling and print damage. This longer cut, however, incorporates some footage seemingly taken from a VHS source - these brief scenes stand out like a proverbial sore thumb.

oh, there it is, thanks.

Paramount Home Entertainment will release Hellraiser III: Hell On Earth on August 18th. The 1992 sequel will be presented with an anamorphic widescreen transfer and Dolby Digital Surround sound. No extras and the film is still its 93-minute R-rated cut. Retail will be $14.99.

This is Paramount kids.

Is anyone really surprised this is the R-Rated Cut?

I remember back when the Friday the 13th discs were being released. Some people (no one had any idea who they were) came out of the woodwork. They were very nasty insisting no uncut versions exist.

When asked about Part 1??? They still insisted no such thing existed and that we didn't know what we were talking about.

I guess they were studio people or whatever. Who else would argue so much against fact????

That's a studios way. Just declare you brain dead even though you are correct. Also, evade every logical question asked. No answers of course...

Unfortunately, not much you can do about anything. There are more important things to worry about anyhow. No need wasting time.

The only way you will likely see these films as intended is if Paramount goes under or sells out as a studio one day and some other studio gets their titles.

There's a detailed review of the puzzle box set here:

http://www.dvdtimes.co.uk/content.php?contentid=12862

For me the wealth of extras makes this a must buy.

so are all past unrated versions of the film (VHS, laserdisc, Canadian DVD) - fullscreen only? This is what is implied as the Fourth Disc bonus inclusion of "Hell on Earth'

Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth
Anchor Bay has included this film as an extra, for the reason being that they just had it. Curious to know I asked producer Marc Morris (Anchor Bay UK DVD producer) if he could explain it:

"When the original Hellraiser III master arrived, it was the same cut edition as had previously been seen (although in this case at least it was 16:9 enhanced). It was because of this that the original uncut 4:3 version was to be included as a bonus feature, until I suggested a restoration was done with the new master.

By that time, the other disc had already been replicated. Still, if people watch the original version, they'll see just how much better the brand new master is."
6/10
Julie, you note that the longer cut is 97min, yet the DVDFile review notes the film (the revised AB UK special edition) at 93min - why is there a discrepency here?

So, there are essentially two versions here, right?:

Feature disc version: 16X9 uncut version with 5.1 (Dolby Digital / DTS) sound

Bonus Disc version: 4:3 uncut version, stereo sound (?)

Maybe the discrepancy in running time was an error on the origuinal video boxes or a PAL/NTSC difference. The imdb lists the uncut one at 97 and the R-rated one at 93.

However, I just put in the original Canadian DVD (the "so-called "Special Edition" from Lion's Gate - not the later Canadian bootleg version that seems to be the only one you can find on Amazon now) and its actual running time is 93 minutes. I remember checking this years ago to see if it was uncut and all the gore scenes (skinned woman, extended massacre, etc.) all seem to be there. However, now I noticed some of those small character moments listed above (people buying drugs, etc.) are not in this Canadian version. Does anyone actually remember those other scenes? Are they in the original unrated US laserdisc and VHS? Are there two versions of the unrated version? The mystery continues...
