Another Independence Day release...

This is release # 5! But hey, if you don't have this movie, at least you have choices....

Already have the 2-disc release. That one's pretty useless.

DonnachaOne 04-12-06 06:13 PM

Oh fuck a pig! When will it all end for them?

I imagine the DVD producers have an ongoing bet with the DVD producers for Anchor Bay...

T1000 04-12-06 06:17 PM

This is version I have;

tommyp007 04-12-06 06:31 PM

blech...the Five Star edition is plenty cool for me.

GoldenJCJ 04-12-06 08:11 PM

Damn! It's been 10 years since ID4 was released? Seems like just yesterday.

Skoobooz 04-12-06 08:18 PM

Wow, another repackaging of this title. Maybe there will be an image upgrade? But then, as has been said before, I'm perfectly happy with my Five Star Edition. Useless.

As a side note, does anyone else sort of miss the Five Star line? It was usually a mark of quality and extensive supplements. Sure, Fox has done good work without the labeling, but I liked the design and the "mission statement" of it.

DRG 04-12-06 08:21 PM

I'm shocked it's not called the "Whoop E.T.'s Ass Edition".

Skoobooz 04-12-06 08:24 PM

We don't have official artwork...don't celebrate yet.

Paul Arnette 04-12-06 08:26 PM

I'm starting to think Fox secretly aspires to be Sony Jr. Headed in the right direction if that's the case.

CertifiedTHX 04-12-06 08:41 PM

I got love for Independence Day, but this is one of the worst excuses for a re-release I have seen. Based on the information at DVDActive, there is nothing different between this and the single-disc and the Limited Edition. Same two versions of the movie, same two commentaries. A 10th anniversary release is a fine idea, but create something unique. Already have the 2-disc Collector's Edition, so definitely will not bother with this.

Harold Wazzu 04-12-06 09:14 PM

I remember watchin this in theaters, quite a good movie for it's time. Still holds up quite well IMO...

"Whoop E.T.'s Ass Edition"...LMAO, exactly what I was thinkin

forumsmy 04-12-06 09:24 PM

They have shown it on TV from time to time too -- and I have looked at parts here and there when its on -- like you said still holding up.

I have the 2-disk collectors - so no more for me.

Drexl 04-12-06 09:56 PM

These repackagings are no big deal.

All they're doing is essentially re-promoting the title by releasing a "new" edition that isn't really new. It gets the title back in the new release section of stores, and that leads to more sales. It's like the way Disney builds up demand for their animated classics, but a little different in that the movie is always available one way or another. It's much cheaper to do this than release a title for the first time, since they have to pay for a transfer, produce supplements, and author a new disc. Of course, if you have any of the other editions, there's no reason to buy this one.

That's what I was thinking too. 10 frickin years!? Man time flies.

UAIOE 04-12-06 11:08 PM

So is this going to be like the one i saw at Best Buy in the "Will Smith 2-pack"?

With a huge Will Smith (and only Will Smith) head plastered on the cover.

Myster X 04-13-06 12:25 AM

I still haven't own this crappy movie.

Quoted for truth.

But does this movie really need to be re-promoted 5 times? This is still one of the biggest blockbusters ever. Not a title people have forgotten I don't think.

marty888 04-13-06 08:37 AM

Not a big deal really - re-packaging for a new promotional push happens all the time with paperbacks, for example.

I'm still waiting for the True Lies Five Star Edition.

cajun_junky 04-13-06 09:07 AM

Wow, I justed finished watching this yesterday. I was totally impressed with my 5 Star version and can't see buying again.

darmok 04-13-06 11:24 AM

Fox expected you to leave your logic at the door when this movie was in theaters, they figure why not the same at the stores?

Yeah, but this is Fox repromoting it, but it still counts I guess. Please, for crying out loud, how many times does a movie like this need a DVD release?

It's so damn ridiculous.

Nick Martin 04-13-06 12:22 PM

It's one of my all-time favorite movies, but that 5 Star version was and is the only version anyone could ever want or need.

Also, there was yet ANOTHER slip-cover version, not with Will Smith's face, but instead a banner quoting its visual effects Oscar win - several FOX titles were recently packaged that way, promoting their Oscar wins.

I disagree. If re-promoting this movie didn't bring in additional sales the first three times, I seriously doubt they'd try a fourth time. I sometimes question the sanity of marketing people, but even they're not this dumb.

And yes, I miss the Five Star line.

Mr. Cinema 04-13-06 03:02 PM

Why spend so much time making 5 versions of one movie, when you have titles like True Lies, The Abyss, and Broken Arrow laying around with non-anamorphic transfers....

fryinpan1 04-13-06 05:21 PM

If a film is good, it will stand the test of time. The buying public does not need to be reminded of the film annually with another DVD release.

natevines 04-13-06 05:39 PM

I already own all the versions of this movie and will be picking this one up as I love the film.

TheNightFlier 04-13-06 05:53 PM

I'll stick with my five star version. I'm another that misses that line.

Cornelius1047 04-13-06 06:09 PM

I'm hoping to devote an entire shelf of my rack to this movie. Keep 'em coming, Fox!

K

DeanoBKN 04-13-06 06:19 PM

If you're going to call it a 10th anniversary edition, you would think Fox would, ya know, make it special?

Yawn...

I, too, wish the Five Star Collection series had been continued and expanded. I don't agree so much with the reasons given for its cancellation, but then, I'm not the head of marketing for Fox Home Entertainment.

Gimme some DTS and I might consider buying it.

Nick Martin 04-13-06 09:26 PM

The release date for this new one - June 27, is exactly 6 years after the 5 Star original came out...huh.

eau 04-14-06 12:24 AM

I'm happy with my Five Star Collection.

critterdvd 04-14-06 12:28 AM

The 5-star release was/is the best release for this movie... and im sorry it was a really good epicish blockbuster... but no movie needs 5 DVD releases! Especially with blu/hd coming out in less than a month now...

boe 04-14-06 12:52 AM

Requirements for me to double dip

I'm not buying any movies I have on DVD again unless they are 1080p and DTS HD. There are many I would double dip for but I'm not rebuying anything unless it has those two features together.

This is definitely one of the movies I would double dip for if it was offered 1080p and DTS-HD.

I see that some of the HD-DVDs are going to be 1080p right off the bat - I'm very impressed -that will put a lot of pressure on the BR camp to release 1080p movies as well.

I'm still holding out for DTS-HD because sound is that important to me. I'm stoked about the 1080p on new HD-DVDs though!
