Last Man on Earth/The Omega Man

Julie Walker 03-23-06 11:15 PM

The only ones I own so far are...

Dawn of the Dead
The Blob
Invasion of the Body Snatchers
The Grudge / Ju On
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
The Thing

...and while it's not yet released. I definitely will be picking up the remake of The Hills Have Eyes since it kicked ass and I own the original(though am not impressed with that film).

And someday I'll be buying the original King Kong and I'm debating whether to pick up the two remakes or not. It all depends on my mood and finances at the time.

RobCA 03-23-06 11:30 PM

The only one I have is Willy Wonka/Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

Rob

fliggil 03-23-06 11:56 PM

I think Bob le Flambeur/The Good Thief might be the only original + remake I own.

Joseph B 03-24-06 12:11 AM

Everybody that purchased last year's 4-DVD Ben-Hur set has both the original and the re-make of that movie (since both were included in the box)!

The only other original and re-make that I own is Planet of the Apes.

With both Ben-Hur and Planet of the Apes, I prefer the Charlton Heston version of the movie.

TheKing 03-24-06 12:26 AM

As of next week:

King Kong
Planet Of The Apes
The Longest Yard
Willy Wonka/Charlie & The Chocolate Factory
Scarface
The Dukes Of Hazzard
The Bad News Bears
The Stepford Wives
The Italian Job
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
Batman (1966 Movie and 1989 Movie)
The Naked Jungle / The MacGyver episode that remade The Naked Jungle and used footage from the movie ;)

I'll add The Producers to the list when the new version comes out.

Doughboy 03-24-06 12:47 AM

Ben-Hur(a given since they're on the same DVD)
Wings of Desire/City of Angels
Dawn of the Dead(1978/2004)
The Dead Zone(movie/TV show)
Insomnia(1997/2002)
The Italian Job(1969/2003)
Thunderball/Never Say Never Again
Manhunter/Red Dragon
The Manchurian Candidate(1963/2004)
Meet Joe Black/Death Takes a Holiday(again, same DVD)
The Office(BBC/NBC)
Open Your Eyes/Vanilla Sky
King Kong(1933/1976)
The Truth About Charlie/Charade(once again, same DVD)
Solaris(1972/2002)

ThatGuamGuy 03-24-06 02:53 AM

So, am I the only DVDtalker with both versions of 'The Man Who Knew Too Much'? It's the only Hitchcock remake I'd buy...

Living Dead 03-24-06 03:21 AM

Dawn of the Dead
Night of the Living Dead
The Ring
The Ring 2
Ben-Hur
10 Commandments
Dracula
The Mummy

That's all I can think of at the moment.

Cygnet74 03-24-06 03:47 AM

I think Solaris is the only title i own both versions of. and i've got two of the original (criterion and ruscico).

Doc Moonlight 03-24-06 06:35 AM

I own many of the previous combinations mentioned, but there's one film I own 3 different versions of:

THE LONGEST YARD (Aldrich/Reynolds version)/THE MEAN MACHINE (Soccer version with Vinnie Jones)/THE LONGEST YARD (Sandler/Reynolds version)

DaTimster 03-24-06 07:12 AM

The original and the remake . . . hmm . . .

Willy Wonka / Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
King Kong (soon)
War of the Worlds
Father of the Bride

I think that's it . . .

ShagMan 03-24-06 07:30 AM

War of the Worlds
Dune (if you count the miniseries)
Robin Hood
Ben Hur
and soon both Planet of the Apes in monkey-head glory!

arod1171 03-24-06 07:46 AM

Other than some of the ones mentioned, I own these:

A kazillion versions of A Christmas Carol (Alastair Sim, Reginald Owen, Patrick Stewart, George C. Scott, The Muppets, Disney, Bill Murray's Scrooged, Albert Finney's Scrooge)

Front Page (1931 and 1974) / His Girl Friday
Ninotchka / Silk Stockings
Philadelphia Story / High Society
State Fair (1945 and 1962) same DVD
Pygmalion 1939 / My Fair Lady
Oliver Twist 1951 / Oliver
Mutiny on the Bounty / The Bounty
Lady for a Day / Pocketful of Miracles
Hamlet 1948 and 1991
Broadway Bill / Riding High
Postman Always Rings Twice 1946 and 1981
Love Affair 1939 and 1994 / An Affair to Remember
Cape Fear 1962 and 1991
Thomas Crown Affair 1968 and 1999
Phantom of the Opera 1925 and 2005
Imitation of Life (1934 and 1959) same DVD

To answer the original question, I think remakes are worth owning if you liked the original just for comparison, even if the remake sucks. It's fun to see what different directors do with the same basic material and catch the various homages to the original. I'm going to pick up the Born Yesterday remake for just that reason even though it pales (IMHO) against the original.

DJ_Longfellow 03-24-06 07:57 AM

Dawn of the Dead
Texas Chainsaw Massacre
Scarface

I cannot think of anything else
