It sure looks mighty fine, wish the USA one was done that way.
Not sure if any new version in Aus has been released again, it looks like this:

Anyone else miss this? I tried to find a related thread here, but you guys know how search is. If anybody can help point me to a thread here with the framing issues, it would be much appreciated.
Region 1
The Back to the Future trilogy was first released on DVD at the end of 2002 in both widescreen and fullscreen versions (in a blue box with Marty and Doc on the cover). Devoted fans of the films quickly noticed that the video of the widescreen version of Parts II and III contained numerous shots that had been framed incorrectly, either because the shots were too high or low to center the image correctly, or because they "zoomed in" on the image, eliminating portions of the image on all sides. (Because the movies were originally shot in open matte, the fullscreen version was unaffected by this.) Outraged fans quickly organized petitions demanding that Universal Studios correct the problem and re-release the DVD set.
In May 2003, Universal corrected the problem and issued "V2" (Version 2) DVDs, that could only be distinguished from the original, flawed DVDs by the mark of a small "V2" near the edge of the discs themselves (and, of course, by comparing the corrected video). However, they did not initially begin packaging the V2 discs with the trilogy box set that was being sent to retailers. Instead, Universal set up a toll-free phone number ((888) 703-0010 in the US) which owners of the original DVDs could call, and ask for a postage-paid envelope to be sent to them. The owner would send their flawed discs to Universal in the envelope, and would soon thereafter receive the corrected "V2" discs by mail. Because Universal did little to publicize this offer outside of the Internet and devoted fan circles, many have criticized Universal's refusal to issue a straight recall of the flawed discs and instead force concerned customers to jump through hoops just to get the correct video of the film.
In January 2005, Universal began a nationwide promotional campaign, announcing that they would re-issue the DVDs of the trilogy at a special low price (about half the set's original retail price) on January 25, 2005, and then put the entire trilogy on moratorium merely a week later, on February 1, 2005. (New stickers on the box declared "Lowest Price Ever: Own It Before Time Runs Out!") The discs in this release contained no new content or bonus features from the original release (indeed, even the packaging was completely identical, except for the promotional sticker), but did finally contain the corrected V2 discs. Curiously, only the disc for Part II displays the "V2" marking on its edge; the Part III disc does not, but fans have analyzed its video carefully and concluded that, despite the lack of the "V2" marking, the Part III disc is the corrected one. (This is also supported by the date of creation of the disc, which matches that of the "V2" release.)

I knew about that, but not all of the details. I got the original Widescreen release as a gift, about three years ago, or longer. I sold it a few months ago and finally re-bought it last weekend.

I waited and waited until Universal released the corrected versions to stores. Picked up my set at Target a few months ago for about $20. I was surprised they had the Widescreen set.

I bought the trilogy DVD the first week, after the misframing issue came out I sent in disc 2 and 3 and recieved the new corrected discs in about 2 weeks. It was the easiest disc replacement process I've ever gone through.

I figured it was going to be a big pain doing a trade-in w/Universal, but it looks like that would have been quicker, easier, and cheaper...

I had to do a mix/match trade to finally put together a set with the correct discs and the booklet.

Had I known about the framing issues before I bought the DVD I probably would have done the same thing you did. As it was I kinda had no choice but to trust the replacement process which, the majority of the time, proves to be a huge pain in the ass.

Bye
I heard about the framing issue before buying a set, and I think I must have heard they were going to start issuing corrected sets, because instead of buying a set and sending the discs back, I simply waited for the "Lowest Price Ever" campaign and got the corrected discs. I did the same thing with "The Meaning of Life", since I didn't buy it until the 2-disc SE was being blown out at WAL-MART, and luckily the "V2" disc was in the package.
I didn't know about the booklet -- I'll have to start checking used copies to see if I can get my hands on one. I managed to score some of the individual case inserts from Hollywood Video, but it'd still be nice to have the booklet.
Speaking of the HV inserts, I've noticed that while the logo text on the spine of "BTTF III" is completely white, there seem to be some covers that have that problem corrected, so it matches the other two. Anyone know the story on this? I've seen white-only ones at both HV and Blockbuster, and I think the "corrected" cover was at a Movie Starz. The covers I have are genuine, but I wonder if the ones from Movie Starz might be inkjet-printed. Any info would be appreciated.

Also, speaking of sending discs back to Universal, I sent my Knight Rider Season Three package out over a month ago, and have yet to get anything back. Has anyone else done this? Unfortunately I forgot to put my return address on the outside of the package, but it's on a sheet of paper inside, along with a copy of my receipt. I can't imagine Universal being paranoid enough to refuse a package with no return address, especially when it's in the mailer they sent out. If it's the post office that's holding things up, they could certainly just open the package and find the address to send it back to. Seemed like there was plenty of postage on it, though.

It's only after the set came out in R1 that Universal corrected the discs and allowed replacements. So of you bought the R4 before the R1 came out, you got mis-framed versions of 2 and 3.

About the loose disc's. They are not loose as I just bought the set 2 days ago, yes it sounds like something is loose but it is a new type of disc holder (white in color). This new holder clangs around alot.
I am in Canada and disc 2 and 3 are the corrected versions even though the V2 is not shown on the disc as on the peviously corrected copies.

I remember the set was first released in Austrailia and it was known that both movies had framing issues. Most people shot it down "oh, you just don't understand how matted movies work" even though it was clear from the examples that something was amiss. Months later we got the set here and then suddenly there was an uproar. I still have not forgiven those who shot down our attempts to correct this before the set arrived in Region 1. If you were amongst that group of fellow forum buddies, bow your head in shame.

It certainly wasn't me, but it sure does remind me of a somewhat similar issue regarding another scifi trilogy...

This set was released to replace the old Region 2 set, which was incorrectly framed. I doubt there will be a US release if the framing problem has already been fixed over there.

Slightly OT...
What ever happened to the supposive release of the BTTF animated series? I remember TVonD saying a web site had been registered by UNI for the Animated DVD release (which redirects to UNI pictures), but that's was back in January '05.

I'd definitely pick that set up, especially if it had extras!!!

Looks like I am about 2-3 years behind on this, but if anybody hasn't done the exchange it looks like they are still doing it. I just called and they are sending the pre-paid package to send back the discs.

Sent for replacements 9/21 and received them sealed in jewel cases 10/19, looks like this is still going for those of you like myself that are a few years behind.
