I e-mailed Universal last summer about a DVD release of the Wizard. They said there is no current and future plans for this release. This was last summer so maybe something has changed by now.

Haha, this must be the funniest thing I've read in a while:
What exactly are "future plans", as opposed to "current plans"? Are they plans for plans, or something?
They said there is no current and future plans for this release.

Anywho, I completely forgot I was involved with this movie. Apparently a few people care enough to want this movie. If not for my buddies at DVDTalk, then who? I'll look into this for you guys. Maybe a couple internet petitions might seal the deal.
Well, I gotta run. Harrison wants to look at the Indy script and I "misplaced" it again. It's so fun to keep him waiting. lol!

I'll buy it whenever/if they release it.

I'd love for just a barebones release of either of these films with a decent transfer. I mean, come on, the over the top performance from Jeffrey Jones should be enough earn its release, yet Howard must rank as the only film in history containing a topless anthropomorphic duck!! That's kudos enough for a release, I think, no matter what George Lucas thinks! Too bad he pulls the strings...
I'm almost afraid to re-watch it, because I except it to be so much more terrible than I remember.

But it is dated April 1. And if it had been actually announced that long ago, don't you think it would be well known by now?

I read somewhere online that Lucas himself personally bought the distribution rights to the film so that it never will be released on DVD. Not sure if that has been brought up here before, but given how long it has taken Universal to issue a dvd, I see that as a possibility. Though, I doubt it.
This should have been released on dvd long ago. It would be a very popular Wal-Mart dump bin title for sure more than likely. Or not..... There seems to be a market for it, since many say it's so bad, it's good.
That April fools day release announcement is obviously a joke. I ain't laughing, this is a nice little silly fluff piece of a film, and worse movies have been released on dvd before.

This is obviously a joke.
As it turns out, George Lucas, the film’s executive producer, decided that before the movie could arrive on DVD, some tweaking was in order. “The duck suit was very expensive… but it was never satisfactory,” Lucas explained, referring to the suit worn by eight separate actors that was enhanced with an animatronic head. For the DVD release, the character of Howard has been digitally replaced by a more authentic-looking CGI creation. In addition, all of the movie’s special effects shots have been enhanced by computer. “Some [of the changes] will be practically invisible to even the most serious fan, while others will be noted right away as a great improvement,” Lucas said.

I think you guys are looking to the wrong person. Lucas doesn't own the film. I'd suggest contacting Universal, which is the studio that owns the film. Truthfully, I don't think Lucas has any problem with Howard. It's the Star Wars Holiday Special he loathes and will never release. Lucas doesn't pull the strings on this and I doubt he'd give it a second thought if Universal decided to release it. I can only imagine Universal believes few would buy it to make it a profitable endeavor to release it.

Lucas disowned the movie, he hates it.
Still, I doubt very seriously Lucas is holding this up. Universal is the one that's holding it up.

a) viewers have a right to see how good or bad it and how silly it is
b) so all this Lucas talk will wind on down
c) Universal releases worse titles than Howard The Duck on dvd
d) there is a market for campy movies like this from the 80's, good or bad
e) the special features might be better than the movie j/k!
f ) and finally, because Lea Thompson is hot in this film!
Lot's of selling points there which Universal has largely ignored. They may be the ones ashamed of the film, and not George Lucas.
