Unless you are dead or don't have a player/video, I don't see why not.

I don't buy it. I believe a DVD-R will out last a tape. I have tapes over 20 years old that play fine. And for most of those years I didn't have any A/C. Nobody really knows for sure so it's all theory and guessing. Sure, if you keep them in high heat and humidity or bright sunlight they'll degrade real quick, but if you take care of them(unlike 99% of the population if the condition of rental discs is any indication) I'm betting they last a few decades. I'm 48 so I only need about 30 years(knock on wood) out of them. I don't worry about it because my philosphy is that what we are putting on DVDR is stuff not available on DVD and since we are using the best media available to store it, what else ya gonna do?

Yeah, I agree with you. It's just what I've read, not that I've really looked into it. And alarmist stuff only makes the news, anyway. So who knows. I think I take good care of stuff, and I have CD-Rs from 8 years ago that still play.

But I think the question of "laser rot" is a good one. Has anyone had any problems with DVDs from 1997?

I will fully second that sentiment in its entirety.
