If that's true, then we might not need an unrated release.
But if there is an unrated release, I wouldn't be surprised if the added material is just some added dialogue scenes rather than extra gore ala Land of the Dead.

OK now I am alittle worried about the unrated dvd news if the alternate ending is used on the film.
Will the R rated version be released in widescreen as well? Sony is one of the guilty studios who've released the theatrical versions P&S only and the unrated O.A.R. Though I did notice they released Exorcism of Emily Rose in WS in both versions. Meanwhile their recent The Fog release goes back to the P&S theatrical,WS:unrated route.
Oh and to the person who said only dialogue was added to Land of the Dead. You are wrong big time, since alot of graphic gore was added that was cut out or covered up in the R rated version!

From dvdactive.com:
cover art here.
My 2 cents: Harry Knowles?!?!? Doing Commentary!!!!! What the hell!?!?!
Harry Knowles
Title: Hostel
Starring: Jay Hernandez
Released: 18th April 2006
SRP: $28.95
Further Details:
Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced an unrated special edition of Hostel which stars Jay Hernandez and Derek Richardson. The disc will be available to own from the 18th April, and should retail at around $28.95 or thereabouts. The film itself will be presented in 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen, along with an English Dolby Digital 5.1 track. As well as including a 94 minute unrated cut of the film (apparently a sicker and more twisted cut!), the disc will include a commentary with director Eli Roth, a second audio commentary with the director and Quentin Tarantino, Boaz Yakin, Scott Spiegel and Eli Roth, a third audio commentary with producer Chris Briggs and documentarian Gabriel Roth, and a fourth commentary with online film pundit Harry Knowles. Completing this new package will be a “Hostel Dissected” making-of featurette, a “Kill the Car” multi-angle interactive feature, another “Hostel Dissected” behind-the-scenes featurette, and a "Kill the Car” multi-angle interactive feature. We've attached a small shot of the art below:

Well, at least they packaged the DVD up with lots of good stuff for fans. Even if I wasn't too terribly impressed with the movie, I really am going to have to check out some of those commentaries. They can keep the Knowles one though. That's....odd.

Also, why isn't Lion's Gate releasing the movie?

I'll just say it's not the bloody crowd pleaser the theatrical version has and ends on a slightly lighter...though still uneasy note

Since I loved the theatrical ending,I would hate for the R rated version to be available in P&S only...if the ending is changed(as hinted at by Roth) on the eventual unrated release.

I'm trying to figure out what the "unrated" version could be? I saw Roth speak after a screening and he said that the did not have to make a single cut to get his "R' rating from the MPAA...
By the way, I love this flick! Funny, scary and frequently both at the same time.

The killing the kid ending was never filmed,it was thought about. And Jay Hernandez mentions the kidnapping ending being filmed though. And Roth mentions it being included on an unrated print of the film if released...or so he hopes.
