Just on a related note, though it's not going to be released in April, Leonard Maltin says in his latest site update that Claude Sautet's "Classe Tous Risques" is getting a Criterion release.
(I must admit, though I've at least heard of most Criterion titles - this is a completely new title for me.)

press release with street dates....
Monterey Pop (single-disc edition) - On a June weekend in 1967, at the height of the ³Summer of Love,² the Monterey International Pop Festival ushered in a new era of rock and roll and launched the careers of Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, and Otis Redding, as well as showcasing veteran performers such as Simon & Garfunkel, The Mamas & the Papas, The Who, and the extraordinary Ravi Shankar. Filmmaker D.A. Pennebaker captured it all, immortalizing those moments that have become legend. Now available for the first time as a single-disc release.

Jimi Plays Monterey/Shake! Otis at Monterey - Jimi Hendrix and Otis Redding arrived in California virtually unknown. Featuring the entire Monterey sets of these legendary musicians, and now available for the first time as a single-disc release.

The 400 Blows - François Truffaut¹s first and most personal feature film, told from the perspective of the director¹s lifelong cinematic counterpart, Antoine Doinel. Sensitively recreating the trials of Truffaut¹s own childhood, The 400 Blows unsentimentally portrays aloof parents, oppressive teachers, petty crime, and a friendship that would last a lifetime. Available after a long absence as a single-disc release.

Harlan County, U.S.A. - In 1973, when the Brookside coal miners voted to join the United Mine Workers union, The Duke Power Company refused to sign the union¹s contact. The struggle that broke out between the company and the workers was brilliantly documented by Barbara Kopple in this Academy Award*winning documentary. With a haunting country and bluegrass soundtrack, Harlan County, U.S.A. is a powerful, sometimes heartbreaking record of the thirteen-month struggle between a community fighting to survive and a corporation dedicated to the bottom line.

A. Is there anything else in the Montery Pop box that's not being released in April? If so, would it be wise to go ahead and pick up the box while it's available (that is, has there been word of it going OOP)?
B. I fear that someday Criterion will cave and slap "Special Edition" on the cover of one of their re-releases. Hopefully they never stoop to that level of double-dipping...but with a month like this, who knows. I mean, is it just me or are they starting to "remaster" and "update" more and more titles?
C. I have the Antoine Doinel box, so no 400 Blows for me. I don't have Grey Gardens...so I'll pick that one up eventually. Sounds fascinating.
D. Harlan County also sounds interesting. I'll give my thumbs up to any documentary that Criterion gives their stamp of approval to. I love documentaries, and Criterion hasn't failed me yet.
E. Where's the "August `06 Lions Gate Titles" thread? Oh how beloved Criterion is. Funny how a company that attempts to cater to the minority has become beloved by the masses.
Due out in June or July, according to Richard Linklater back in September or so.

B. I think we are going to be seeing more of this. Anamophic transfers and a wealth of extra features are worthy of it...and its cool that they will be offering the supplement disc for Grey Gardens to everyone.
C. I also have the Box set, and am glad that this film can be offered outside the boxset again...as long as I don't get jipped out of special features

I remember seeing Harlan County, USA many moons ago. It's a great film for those that have never seen it.
I might sell my Doinel Box and pick up the 400 Blows disc. Have to think it over.

NatrlBornThrllr the Monetery Set includes the two discs being released and the outtakes disc, which includes hours of additional footage and a geat booklet, worth the cash. Also, thanks about Dazed and Confused, is Beyond the Valley of the Dolls still on?

SOME DATE CHANGES...
from barrie maxwell
Criterion begins April with the release on the 11th of two titles previously available only as part of box sets. Supplementary content is the same as before. The titles are Francois Truffaut's The 400 Blows (1959) and the concert film Monterey Pop (1968). On April 25th, we'll finally get the film that really launched the careers of director Louis Malle and actress Jeanne Moreau - the film noir Elevator to the Gallows (1957, aka Frantic). Criterion also has announced some street date changes. The Children Are Watching Us (1944) has been delayed from January to March 28th; The Complete Mr. Arkadin (1955) has been delayed from March to April 18th; and Fists in the Pocket (1965) has been delayed from March to April 25th. Canadians should note that The Complete Mr. Arkadin will not be available in Canada while Fists in the Pocket and 3 Films by Louis Malle will not be available in Quebec.

Kind of psyched about The 400 Blows, and I've been waiting on Grey Gardens, so I'll probably pick up the rerelease. Not a bad list, IMHO, just nothing super-exciting or new.

What happened to the Grey Gardens re-release?
I was just reminded when my mom used the word "staunch" and I suddenly began telling her we should start singing and dancing around the house and feed the raccoons, to which she laughed, and then said she had no idea what I was talking about.
I need to show it to her now to save face.

Or it could be closer to the end of the year, because that's where they usually put their re-releases. They've got a bunch of 'em still left for this year though (Seven Samurai, Yojimbo, Sanjuro, Playtime, and Grey Gardens).
