Interesting titles. Also interesting that Criterion will apparently be going the "double disc first, single disc later" route.

weird, that they are releasing monterey pop outside the box. WIll the box be going OOP? Glad to see 400 blows back as a single for those who don't want to pay for the big box. I assume its the samething asthe box....cuz i don't want to buy it again.

MBoyd 01-03-06 12:22 PM

Grey Gardens 2 disc sort of came out of nowhere. That's a surprise update to me. Always figure they would put 400 Blows back out alone.

I was just looking on the CC site to see if the boxset was oop, and i never noticed THE HARDER THEY COME went oop, is there going to be a reissue, or is it just oop?

Just OOP

The only (little) worthy news here is the Malle film...everything else as far as I am concerned qualifies as "Criterion's worst release announcement in a long, very long time".

Harlan County, U.S.A.

canaryfarmer 01-03-06 03:10 PM

One day, one wonderful day, I'll read a Criterion Upcoming Release List and I'll be able to say, "Hey! I've actually seen or heard of that one!"

yeldarb367 01-03-06 03:22 PM

I'm glad I held out on Grey Gardens. It's going on the DDD wishlist for sure.

jmj713 01-03-06 03:35 PM

Yeah, 4 of the 6 releases are actually re-releases. I have the Doinel box, so no 400 Blows for me. Other new titles don't look too exciting.

Sondheim 01-03-06 03:41 PM

"Elevator to the Gallows" and "Harlan County USA" will be must buys for me.

bboisvert 01-03-06 03:53 PM

Well, I suppose they can't hit it out of the park every time... but, that's a pretty boring list. :)

I hope that day never comes. Though I'm sure you've heard of Dazed & Confused.

This month is a letdown. But at least my wallet will take a break.

Harlan County, USA has been on my want list for a while.. glad they are finally getting around to putting it out!

Is that still in the works? Also, Beyond the Valley of the Dolls?

The Bus 01-03-06 05:41 PM

Why the hell do we need a new version of Grey Gardens?

I've yet to see the film but I've read at the criterionforum.org that there is apparently an abundant amount of unreleased footage and that some work was done regarding what eventually happened to the people in the documentary. Also there is speculation that the dvd may include a documentary on the directors life.

I've read a lot of good things about this documentary and it has been on my wishlist for a while. I'm glad I waited.

I wonder what they smell like.

I wonder what they smell like.
I hear "Grey Gardens" 2-disc will be a blend of the usual highly touted Criterion smell, and the smell of a nursing home. Can't wait!

Surely one day they'll run out of esoteric art films like Armegeddon to release.

ReservoirDog45 01-04-06 09:21 PM

Jeez will people get off Armegeddon (and the Rock for that matter). They agreed to put both on dvd and in return got the rights to other films owned by Disney (I believe the Wes Anderson movies were a part of that)

I keep waiting for "The Adventures of Baron Munchausen".

canaryfarmer 01-05-06 12:48 AM

Double True. I finally caved and bought the current version during DDD's 20% off sale. It's probably my 2nd favorite film of all time, but I really was hoping for a Criterion release. I figure that if it was ever going to be released on DVD by Criterion, it would have been by now. I was surprised how good the R1 Columbia looked, and now kind of wish I had bought it earlier. I would still be there Immediately should a CC version ever arise.
