Seeing both covers doesn't really suprise me. When focus released "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" they originally released it in a pretty basic edition with artwork similar to the NON SILVER edition. A few months later they anounced the pimped out SE and it had the same box frame as the silver edition. Perhaps if the film was more successful at the oscars they would have immediately released a 2-disc awards edition. It seems as though they will be following the same release strategy as ESofTSM.

Idiots.

That's actually nice. It doesn't detract visually from the cover, and it is kind of hidden so that people will pick it up in OAR without realizing it.

Kocheese99 03-31-06 12:40 PM

the store i work at got their shipment and the Silver artwork is for the FULLSCREEN version. The Non silver are the widescreen.

I'd agree except that if the fullscreen version has the same cover (it may not based on the previous post), then it would be just as easy for an OAR person to pick up the wrong copy.

Pride and Prejudice also had the widescreen print very small.

BTW I saw a commercial for BBM last night and they showed the silver cover.

That is not correct. I was in Wal-Mart today and they had their boxes out for 4/4/2006 and I asked if I could see BBM, and they had the WS and FS versions with the Silver covers. The theatrical artwork which may be available but will be more limited, has the WS logo low on the right hand side of the cover, and online I saw the FS logo there to in the same exact spot.

bunkaroo 03-31-06 06:30 PM

Well I've got mine in hand and it is not the silver one. However, I'm guessing the silver ones are the post-award ones, as the "award-winning director" blurb on the non-silver is referring to Crouching Tiger, not BBM.

My widescreen version is a 'non silver version' as well. And I am very happy about that.

Duality 04-03-06 01:48 PM

Has anyone noticed that the silver cover actually shows more of the poster at the top?

Yeah, I noticed that and all the silver in the backround. :)

I will try to find the non-silver cover tomorrow when I pick this up.

dvd_luver 04-04-06 11:59 AM

I had a very hard time finding it, but I managed to find the non-silver WS copy at out of all places, Dominicks. Haha. Every one else had the silver cover, I have watched some of it already. This transfer has to be of reference quality for any DVD to be perfectly honest. Wow! I am very impressed with what Focus Features has done here. I will pick up the 2-disc set when they release it as well.

This film is incredible. The real best picture of 2005.

Duality 04-04-06 12:01 PM

How's the hunting? Anyone find a chapter insert? I'm thinking about a quick trip to Best Buy on my lunch. Personally, I like the silver cover.

MikeDeN2K 04-04-06 12:20 PM

Picked mine up at Best Buy today. Had to take advantage of the free book. Checked both NR tables and both displays, all WS and FS copies were the silver ones.

Oh well.

Earlier, hunting for the non-silver cover was a complete pain. I stopped at Best Buy, Kmart, Wal-Mart, Miejer, and than I decided to go to Dominicks, and there it was, I was glad to have found it. I know that is crazy, but I wanted the non-silver cover and was determined to find it.

So, the hunting for the non-silver cover is better. :)

And there is no chapter insert. made in mexico.

DeepSleep 04-04-06 04:22 PM

I rec'd the widescreen version from Amazon today. It is the silver cover version. Stamped on the shinkwrap says "Disc made in Mexico".

dvd_luver 04-04-06 06:56 PM

I forgot to go to Borders and Barnes and Knoble, when I went back out I checked and they have the non-silver one there for $19.99 on sale at Borders, and $22 and change at Barnes and Knoble. So if anybody is seeking out the non-silver cover, they have them there.

adamblast 04-04-06 08:15 PM

Yep, the silver covers are Amazon & online, and stocked at Best Buy, Circuit CIty, Costco, Target, WalMart, etc... And the non-silvers seem to be the bookstores, mall shops, Virgin Mega Store, and independant megastores like Nebraska Furniture Mart. Maybe they ship earlier? Dunno, but the silvers all say "made in Mexico" and have a 3 Academy Award headline, the non-silvers don't say where they were made. No inserts with any of 'em, of course.

I hope there's a better version someday.

A friend works for the DVD production company and he says there's talk of a Summer Wind special edition. No release date yet.

My walmart doesn't even have it displayed anywhere in the store.

You just made me think of something fun.

I feel like calling all the Wal-Mart's in the square states and ask for the video dept to see if they have it.

Cameron 04-05-06 10:34 PM

Terrific. The last 3 guests I helped at work before close, all older males, rented out "Brokeback" to my delight. FWIW, Hollywood Video's sell-thru copies of the movie have the theatrical poster cover art. May be able to price match as well, I never asked.

Oh, and: Amazon's initial WS shipments were with all silver-border, but as of Wednesday people have been getting non-border versions as well, so it's either random or has changed.
