Rent ----> 2/28/06 (tentatively)

Thedigitalbits.com is reporting that Sony is planning to release Rent on Feb. 28th.

Also... this has yet to be announced (consider it Rumor Mill worthy until it is), but we're hearing that Sony is tentatively planning to release its film version of Rent on 2/28 as well.

Hope there's a second disc with a complete stage-filming of the original cast...

The only movie I've seen twice in the theater all year. Wonderful film.

If it's true, DAY-UMMMMMMM that was fast.

Although given Sony's track record, I have a feeling that this will be a "slimmed-down" version and the SE version will be released six months later. They can use the song from the movie Team America as part of the new "nickname" trend for the SE.

I've seen materials which have this coming on 2/21, not 2/28......nonetheless, expect it to be announced the second week of January.

Can't wait for this, although I was surprised it didn't do a little better at the box office. I thought the ad campaign on tv was excellent and the trailers were really fun and emotional at the same time. *shrugs*

I hope they do have some good extras on it, like some of the deleted songs.

And HOPEFULLY, Sony will start putting the original trailers on the DVD! I don't wanna buy Bewitched just so I can have the Memoirs of a Geisha trailer.

I haven't seen the movie or the play
How does this compare with Angels in America?
I know Rent is a musical but both are about AIDS in the 80's.

I was wondering the same thing. Nothing has been announced and the DVD comes out in less than two months.

However, that seems to be the trend now. Waiting... comes out in four weeks, but it's features weren't announced until the end of December. Serenity wasn't announced until early November for a mid-Decemeber release date. And so on and so on.

Really wish I caught this in theaters now but oh well. Critics didn't seem to like it even though it has been a while since a good musical has come out. Hell, I even got out to go see Phantom of the Opera despite how trashed that got and that wasn't so good so maybe I was wiser this year.

Fuck the critics on this one. Most of them admitted in their reviews that they never saw the stage version. I've seen both and both were fantastic (though the stage version does win out). This is unlike Phantom of the Opera (where I've seen both -- the stage version is okay and the film turned to shit after the first act).

Granted, Rent as a film is different than the original musical, but it is a change that works on film. The stage version is a complete rock opera, but the film is more of a drama with musical interludes (which makes more sense considering rock operas don't transition over to film that well). The changes Columbus and company seemed to make might've sounded drastic, but they work all the better. The only thing I could've asked for was that the film would've been better if more work placed on the film's editing.

For a brief while, Amazon listed this as a two-disc set.
