Wow, if the customers are tech savvy then they'll know about the problems with DVD-18s and won't buy your titles. I also wasn't aware that tech savvy people are attracted to "bright new shiny things". Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go stare at a light bulb.

I fell victim with Cinderella Man. I watched it recently, and 3 times toward the end of the movie the audio and video started stuttering. It was about a month after I bought it, and no longer had the receipt. I emailed Universal and they gave me this canned response telling me to send the dvd, receipt, and a description of the problem and they would replace it. After I pushed them further, they agreed to send me a prepaid mailer, and for me to not worry about the receipt.

I received a reply from Amazon, and they are dispatching a replacement seaQuest set at their expense! Just as grundle suggested, I can then swap for the good discs, and send back the defective set. Thanks for the advice, grundle! I am quite impressed that Amazon is willing to do this, since they are covering for Universal’s shortcomings.

I also sent two emails to Universal, but have yet received no response.

You're welcome.

I'm a little late in replying to this, but yes, I had a problem with episode 5 on disc 1. Amazon kindly overnighted me a replacement. I played every episode (didn't watch them, just checked at the end to see if the playback time was right) before returning a set with the defective disc back to them.

I had the same problem when I got American Gothic. My solution was to return the disc for a refund. The problems I had with that set made it impossible to enjoy the show itself.

My advice is to not buy Universal boxsets if they use dvd 18's.

Wow, big thumbs up to Amazon for excellent customer service.

I have also just stopped buying Universal DVD-18s. I managed to get my money back on many of the problem sets I had, but I'm still stuck with a wonky copy of Orgazmo and The Lugosi collection. My biggest disapointment is the fact I can never own the entire Columbo or Hitchcock presents TV series and I looked forward to those for a long time.
Maybe someday on HD-DVD these series will get a release I can actually buy.

I recently picked up "The Frighteners" and sure enough my copy froze. Lucked out with the second one. Annoying as hell that we have to play the odds if we want something Universal releases. The upcoming "Dune" is on a dvd-18 too, yes?

I have many, many dvd-18 discs from Universal: Monster Legacy, Hitchcock Set, Lugosi, Hammer, Cinderella Man, Casino, etc. Never had a playback problem. Maybe we should compile a list of players that will play these discs properly. I have an Onkyo DV-CP702

I haven't had problems with any recent disks like Cinderella Man, Orgazmo, Blues Brothers, Carlito's Way, Schindler's List, or Ray. I have had more problems with older Paramount titles like M:I II.

If anyone is curious, I did finally get a reply from Universal, though it is a moot point at this juncture since I have already received a replacement copy from Amazon. In comparison, Universal’s customer service is less than stellar, which is disappointing since the issue is with their own product.

Here is their reply:

Your e-mail has been forwarded to this department for reply. Please return the Disc 3, along with a copy of this correspondence and the following information:

1. Description of the problem.
2. Manufacturer and model number of your player.
3. Chapter and time code where the defect occurs.
4. Your shipping address (not P.O. Box; U.S. and U.S. Territories).
5. Mailing address (APO/FPO addresses only).
6. Daytime telephone number.
7. A copy of your receipt for original purchase.

Send by traceable method to:

M. Kustanovich
Universal Studios Home Entertainment
10 Universal City Plaza, Suite 700
Universal City CA 91608

Please send only the item(s) to be replaced, and allow 4-6 weeks to receive your replacement.
We appreciate your patronage and hope that you will continue to enjoy Universal releases.

Sincerely,

Universal Studios Home Entertainment

My copy of "Cinderella Man" froze where I imagine there was a layer change, and neither button on my remote (track forward or backward) would help. It would finally begin playing again either several tracks earlier or several tracks later. This happened on two players in my home, and is the only disc with which I've encountered this problem. DVD-18 problem? I may re-evaluate whether it's worth owning DVD-18s in the future because "Cinderella Man" is virtually useless to me now.

I've never had "ANY" problems with my Panny RP-82 until the "Frighteners!" That film froze at the freezer scene an wouldn't play or shut off.

Now again, I have some pixelation on the featurette of "Tremors 3."

Universal does have a problem and they should fix it.
