50 Movies. 25 Days. It's the December Holiday Movie Challenge
 

I enjoyed myself so much with the horror movie challenge last month. I was number 26 with only 30 movies but still it was a load of fun.

I thought perhaps we should try it again with Christmas / Holiday movies. I have lowered the list from 100 to 50 but you are still able to shoot for as many as you want.

Now, with this one I know it will be much more difficult because there aren't that many Christmas / Holiday movies out there.

Here are the Official Rules:

Official Rules

-All Movies Must Be Watched Between 12:00AM on December 1st Through the End of December 25th (a.k.a. 12:01AM on December 26th)
-No Movies Will Be Accepted Before December 1st or After December 25th
-You ARE ALLOWED to Watch Christmas Specials. Such as: Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, Frosty the Snowman, The Year Without a Santa Claus, etc.
-You Are NOT ALLOWED to Watch Christmas Episodes from a TV Series. However, IF the TV show has a special that runs longer than a regular episode, such as: The He-Man She-Ra Christmas Special or The Flintstones Save Christmas, Then Those Are Allowed
-You ARE ALLOWED to Watch Thanksgiving or New Years Movies. Any Movie That Takes Place During the "Holiday" Season Are Allowed.
-The Film DOES NOT Have to Be Holiday Oriented. You Can Watch Movies That Take Place During the "Holiday" Season. Such as: Die Hard, Batman Returns, Gremlins, Etc.
-The Whole Movie or At Least Most of the Movie MUST Take Place During the "Holiday" Season. A Movie With One or Two Scenes Does NOT Count.
-A Movie May Only Be Watched ONCE. However, You CAN Watch a Movie, Then Watched It Again with a Commentary and Count it TWICE
-Don't Limit Yourself to DVDs. You Can Count Movies Seen in the Theater or on VHS
-The Most IMPORTANT Thing is To Have Fun With This!

I hope this is just as good as the horror movie challenge.

Well, I'm game, although I don't have nearly as many holiday movies as I do horror.:)

The reason I dropped it from 100 to 50 is because I'm so sure that a lot of people have 100 holiday movies or even 50, but I love the Christmas season and I figured 50 was a pretty good number to shoot for. An average of 2 movies a day, not too bad.

Only thing I would change is the start date...run it holiday to holiday. Thanksgiving to Xmas, since the Holiday season starts the onslaught of movies.

Same here. Taking a cursory look, you could count the ones I have on one hand. I might find some stuff on the Looney Toons/Disney Treasures collections.

I could get a few in but my total is going to be lousy. I was not that good with the horror challenge with 15 ( and I love horror ) but this one is going to be even worse.

I'll go for it. Does this also include different kinds of movies that occur through the holidays like Batman Returns,Silent Night/Deadly Night and Die Hard? :)

If not, then we're all going to be watching at least 25 different versions of A Christmas Carol. ;)

Yes, those are fine. I'd try to steer away from the horror movie things like Silent Night, Deadly Night but those are all good. Don't forget Die Hard 2

That's what I was initially thinking about. Forrest Gump has a brief New Years Eve scene. This could get complicated :)

what about shows that were traditionally shown in the holiday season, like the wizard of oz? IIRC this used to be broadcast around christmas during the 70s and 80s.

I'd like to recommend Ernst Lubitsch's wonderful <b>The Shop Around the Corner</b>.

I can pledge that I'll be watching my unwatched copies of "A Christmas Story" and "Elf" before Christmas. That's it!

I'd say no, because these are holiday movies or holiday themed. The Wizard of Oz is neither.

No, I think that the entire movie or at least most of the movie take place during Christmas. Because there is a scene in Jersey Girl during Christmas. So I'd say No

Let's hope repeat viewings count... Last year I must have seen A Christmas Story 20something times in Dec.

The same rule from the horror movie challenge stands. You can watch the movie once, then with a commentary and count that twice. But, not watching the same movie over and over again.

I just watched X-Mas with the Kranks....I guess I started too soon. And I will NOT watch that movie again.

Oh well... I'll take part, but probably won't make it... Christmas Story & Christmas Vacation are usually on regular rotation... I throw The Ref in there a few times too...

Seems a bit restrictive to make it "holiday themed". A significant amount of season should be enough, it shouldn't have to be "about" the holidays.

Throw Love Actually onto your lists, great film that takes place around the holidays.

so what about starting this on Thanksgiving...

Don't forget about the all time holiday smash hit "Jingle all the Way"

It's not just "holiday themed" you are allowed to watch movies that take place during the holidays. As stated in the first post. But the whole movie or at least most of it must take place during Thanksgiving, Christmas, or New Years (yes and Hanukah counts and Kawanza and so on...)

I want to wait until December 1st. There's not a lot of holiday movies out there and I think 25 days is enough time.

He-Man She-Ra Christmas Special can be included

I think people want to start at thanksgiving because that's when a lot of holiday movies start getting watched, not because they need more time.

exactly...Holiday movies start to air on televion, and in most of the revival theaters for thanksgiving. Just seems to make more sense to run it from holiday to holiday...oh well

So this eliminates "It's A Wonderful Life", "Boys Town", and "The Bells of St. Mary's". ;)
