Excellent point! Of all of the series that HBO has produced, they've managed to sell one of them into syndication (like 6 or 7 years after its run ended) and are on their way to selling a second!!

Part of the reason why HBO shows don't readily show up in syndication is that they are often perceived as "damaged goods" once they have their nudity, violence and swearing excised. How many people are going to want to watch a censored Sopranos?

I recommend that anyone thinking about buying carnivale pick up the korean set, you've got nothing to lose.
Are these legit or bootleg copies?

Koreandvds.com is 100% legit as far as I know. I bought the 4-disc Superbit version of Blackhawk Down from them and was totally pleased with the transaction - although (as you might imagine) shipping from Korea takes a little while.

Which brings up another point - HBO box sets are probably cheaper in other regions due to varying income levels. How many copies of the Band of Brothers box set would people in India buy if it were priced at INR 4,481.50 (USD$100)? Not a hell of a lot, given that the average salary in India is USD$14,518. Of course, India is an extreme example - South Korea, not so much.

I checked out that Korean link, and it says: this about a third of the way down the screen:

* Titles produced in Korea are subject to government censorship when it involves nudity and violence. Although the censorship has been lessened over the years, frontal nudity and extreme violence(although rare) are forbidden. Please be careful especially when purchasing erotic movies. When you are worried about censored and deleted scenes of graphic violence and frontal nudity, do not buy from our site.
What's up with that? Have any of you guys noticed anything missing? "Cause other than that, going region free seems like a great idea for some of this stuff.

No they don't!!!
Any of the sets I have (Deadwood, CyE 1-4, Carnivale) have practically no extras. Charging what they do for relatively barebones releases is pretty outrageous.

X Files too (100+), and the later South Park sets (40 dollars for 3 discs!).

Too cocking expensive.

That's what I was getting at with post #14... They're going to price them at a point where they will be able to sell a lot of them, yet still turn a profit.

? Deadwood has 1.5 hours of bonus features, and commentary on 4 episodes...
? Carnivale has a short (but interesting) featurette and commentary on 3 episodes...

You do have a point with CYE... They had the 1hr pilot and 1 commentary on S1, but since then, bugger all... The commentary was really interesting, so I'm really disappointed that they haven't done any others.

The picture and sound are generally top notch, and as someone else pointed out, they're not bare bones (except CYE). It's still not worth $80, but I stand by the fact that they're well done.

However, it DOES have an effect on the overall price of some sets. You mentioned Simpsons (and I am at a complete loss in trying to remember excessive use of popular songs in this series...they alwasy seem to have their own original music in the sound track)...I am confident Simpsons will sell more than Six Feet Under. Assuming both series had the same amount of music uses in each episode and cost just as much to clear those rights, it's conceivable that Fox could charge less for Simpsons because they could sell more copies.

The reason SCTV sets came out with 89.99 SRPs is because of music rights. If WKRP was ever released on DVD, the price of each season would be prohibitively expensive to get the costs back. There are examples of music increasing the price of certain sets.

And the excuse that HBO won't make money back in syndication on these shows is weak. Sex and the City is in syndication and Sopranos is on the way to syndication as well, and stand to make the studio tons of money ijn syndication. Have the price points gone down on the season sets?

The first answer, I think, is the best answer: they charge what they do because they can and know people will pay it.

I agree that music licensing does have an effect on the price of some sets, to be sure. But I still don't think it has that much of an impact on most of the HBO sets. And I did mention that things like Friends and The Simpsons will sell way more than something like SFU, which could also explain the lower price tag. And as for The Simpsons and their music use, they tend to use tons of random song snippets, moreso in later seasons.

So again: the HBO sets are so expensive because a) HBO needs to make a profit, and b) people pay it. The end.
