And we really can't have someone from R2/4 review this. They've had anamorphic all along.

I actually own that R2 DVD. I really wasn't impressed with the picture AT ALL (although it may have been this crappy DVD player I bought) and, while I haven't watched all of the extras, the alternate ending is laaaaame.

That wasn't on it.

The only thing that wasn't included was the test film.

so a friend of mine just sent me this:

Tired of all the speculation, I decided to contact one of the Criterion's bosses, Jon Turell, who was kind enough to clear things up for me:

Unfortunately, we have not been able to secure DVD rights to The Game As you know we had it on laserdisc, but no luck so far for DVD. We’ll keep trying.

All best,

Jonathan
As Jon noted, they are still trying, so don’t give up hope just yet.

From thedigitalbits re: Universal HD-DVD releases for the next few months:

April - The Good Shepherd, Smokin' Aces, The Game, The Jerk, The Hitcher, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, The Nutty Professor

Now, granted that's not an announcement regarding a standard DVD, but hopefully they'd release the rumored Special Edition around the same time with the same extras [edit]: from the R2 dvd.

The HD version has been announced for a month or so now...no special features.

Damnit! I still want a standard DVD SE release of this though

Is there a solid release of this in another region that I can pick up?

I will not be picking up this until there is an HD release with the Special Features.

Not really. The transfer on the existing special editions is sub-par and the extras are ported over from the old laserdisc. If you haven't heard the commentary before, pick it up but I'm hoping for a new release some day.

I've seen a review of the HD-DVD version of the Game, and many reviews point to the picture not being the best of HD-Displays..perhaps this film is just shot in a way that'll never gurantee a awesome looking picture compared to alot of others.

Nope, it definitely needs a clean-up and a new transfer.

Perhaps this will one day be a Criterion Blu-ray. Don't give up, Jonathan Turell!

Well, I suppose with a new Fincher film coming out we can always hope this one gets released... maybe Universal will at least spring for a new transfer with the eventual bd...even if it's still bare-bones.

I hope we get a BD of this. The original release isn't even anamorphic, for shame .

Re: The Game: SE finally??

Every time this thread gets bumped back up I think "it's finally going to happen" and it always turns out someone is just hoping for it to happen. I sure hope when it hits blu ray that it also gets an anamorphic sd dvd release at the same time.

I've been enjoying the HD DVD for years now.

Every time this thread, or the Kill Bill thread, or the State thread, or the Song of the South thread, etc. gets bumped back up someone makes that exact statement. We get it..
