Rare DVDs, both in print and OOP, that you've never seen before in person?
 

I'll get the obvious one out of the way, and say that I've never seen the Salo Criterion Collection DVD. I've seen it on eBay of course, but I never saw it in a store. I've also never seen The Red Desert DVD release before.

A while back, before the latest release of Ghostbusers and Ghostbusters II I could have sworn that a two pack, or a single disc release with both of the films in one package, was released. Did that ever happen or am I just crazy?

I've also been looking for The Return, but I can't find it anywhere other than online. The people at Best Buy told me they don't even have it in their in-store system anymore.

I see Salo on my bookshelf every night. I'll never see the $400 I spent on it again, though.

I did at one point, back in '99 or so, hold a copy of it in my hands at Suncoast while looking through the foreign films section....

Actually the only OOP Criterion I don't currently have (not counting titles that have been reissued in newer, better versions) is Playtime... but I'm not dropping $100 on a title that they have plans to rerelease in the not too distant future.

I think the only other rare titles I have in my collection are Double Indemnity and The 47 Ronin Parts I & II, although the latter is out on loan to a friend and I suspect that he may have lost it (considering it's been on loan for two years now!)

You are not crazy--the original GHOSTBUSTERS: Collector's Series and GHOSTBUSTERS 2 DVDs were offered as a two-pack back in the day.

Nope, not crazy at all. I look at that Ghosbusters 2-pack every time I look at my G row of DVDs. Considered double dipping fo the new, nice GB2 set, but that idea kinda faded. :)

I have yet to see "Salo", "This is Spinal Tap", or "The Killer" myself, and in my many, many weekly travels, I'm surprised. Haven't spotted many HTF/OOP Criterions, for that matter. None of the LE Anchor Bay tins, i.e. Two Lane Blacktop, Maniac, The Beyond, Let Sleeping Corpses Lie, etc.

The day I do come across "Spinal Tap" however....mmmmmmmmm..

Hey, Brent, what's the big deal about "The Return"? Who directed it? Who released it? I never heard of it.

I think he is talking about the 2003 Russian film directed by Andrei Zvyagintsev that Kino International put out.

I still remember the day (December 22rd 2000) when my Salo: CC came in the mail. At the time it was the best $225 I have spent in my life.

IIRC there was a classsic film-noir release that was recalled (rights issue?) before its release date, but a few copies escaped. It may be the rarest dvd, but not as expensive as Salo since it isn't as well known. and no, I can't remember the title.

I did see Salo and The Killer Criterions at Tower Records back in 1998, but I didn't have the foresight to buy them.

I never saw The Killer, Hard Boiled, or Salo Criterions. I'm pretty sure Salo was out of print even before I got into DVDs in 1999. I did almost pick up a Playtime Criterion back in the day but changed my mind. I don't think I ever saw Swamp Thing DVD in person. I don't buy DVDs in the store anymore so I haven't seen a lot of new dvds. Lords of Dogtown Unrated!! OMG!!

I saw Swamp Thing many times in stores and never picked it up. Wound up paying $40 for it one I found out the new DVD was not the international cut.

The Evil Dead Lunchbox Edition. Been quite a while that its not seen in stores/online auctions. Well if one pops up in ebay, its lucky for someone to get it at around $50.

You thinking of Farewell, My Lovely? I actually have a copy of this. It's supposed to be very, very scarce.

A place around here actually lets you rent Killer: CC, Hard Boiled: CC, and The 400 Blows: CC (1st print). So Salò remains unseen.

The toughest find for myself was finding the KISS Unplugged dvd, that was near impossible to locate, I finally found one at a Suncoast in Taunton MA a few years ago. I hear they are now re-releasing so go figure!

I actually held not one, but TWO copies of 'Salo' in my greasy little hands the week it came out and I decided not to buy one. (I already own the laserdisc and I figured it wasn't worth it because it wasn't a new anamorphic transfer) I put 'em back on the racks and it's a momemnt of personal failure that still haunts me. And will continue to do so until a blu-ray edition is released.

I could have kept one for myself and put one aside to sell!

It's a shame the lasedisc never skyrocketed in demand.

I could have bought Salo when it was going out of print back in the day, but as I hadn't seen it and didn't know about the skyrocketing of value on Criterion discs (their dvds were still pretty new), I passed and kick myself regularly now. I own all the rest from when they were first released including The Killer, Spinal Tap, etc. I also have the Lucertola Rabid Dogs, but paid $70 for that and several months after Anchor Bay annouced their release plans for it. I also kick myself over The Red Desert. I didn't know the film, but could have had it used for $6 or $7 about 3 or 4 years ago. Oh well.

I have the FAREWELL MY LOVELY, bought it from reel.com, ah the old coupon days!

i had a copy of the criterion silence of the lambs in my hands at fye a few years ago (they also had the robocop disc as well) and passed them up. i believe they were oop at the time as well.

I've never seen several of the Criterion OOP titles, including This Is Spinal Tap. I hadn't seen Sid and Nancy until I happened to luck into a copy via the bunch that showed up at an online retailer a couple of years back.
