I second the vote for A Clockwork Orange. I don't know whether it is just me, but i feel that all Kubricks films have been ignored when it comes to DVD. Sure they released the Kubrick collection with the documentary DVD, but that seems very bare bones to me. They could have had commentaries on the DVDs by the actors (which i am sure would be very interesting for stories of Kubricks notorious un-ending takes), and i am sure that materials are available. For example i remember seeing a making of 2001....why wasn't that ever included on the DVD. The only film that had any extra was The Shining which included the excellent making of by Kubricks daughter. Criterion also did a fantastic job with Spartacus....but after reading books on Kubrick you realize that Spartacus was a film that Kubrick seemed to ignore in a way.

There was also an excellent documentary made by Channel 4 in England about a Clockwork Orange that was presented by critic Tony Parsons and included interviews with most of the people and talked about why it was banned (this was screened on television before it had been officially re-released in the UK). That would be good to include.

I see Criterion more as a company that releases movies that otherwise would never get released. Not so much as a feature factory for barebones DVDs.

I dont agree with that statement roomservice

I think that the big companies that own the rights to these properties know that video and DVD sales are higher then most films debut's on the silver screen.

So why would they let outside companies come in and help produce properties they they gain the most with already.

Why not do what they've done now for the past 6 years....

1. Release film with nothing
2. re-release film restored footage
3. add Special Edition w/ 'never before seen fotage'
4. Director's Cuts 'footage added back into film'
5. Anniversary editions

They make a ton of money, and dont have to bring the filmmakers back on board for approval and an extra paychecks.

They now know the consumers track record for what titles are selling... they will not be making the same mistake as they did in the 80's and early 90's as with LD's.

Most companies have independent studies for what films from their studio's you would like to see most.

Ooh, you've got some good ones on your list True Story1011!

Delicatessen, The Game, Battle Royale.

True, there are many titles Criterion has spruced up for DVD, but most of their catalog are older, classic, foreign, and lesser known titles that cult fans or film buffs are happy just to have features or not.

Don't know if it's been mentioned, but since Criterion recently did Dassin's '49 and '50 film noirs (Thieves' Highway + Night and the City), it makes sense to re-issue his '47 and '48 noirs (Brute Force + Naked City). Both these are available on OOP Image discs with poor transfers, and sell for more than $100, I believe. Fortunately I found a copy of Brute Force at my local library so I was at least able to watch it (excellent film BTW) but Criterions of these would be awesome.
