Believe it or not, there are lots of VHS tapes that still have substantial value - i.e., equal to or greater than their original cost.

I'm slowly dumping VHS tapes on eBay, and in the past 2 months I've had 15 titles sell for $10 or more, with several in the $18/19 range, and one for $29.82. (Hey, it pays for the DVDs!) Of course, uou can put up a popular title for $0.99 and get NO bids, because so many are out there. The point is, there's no way to really predict what will or will not have any real value when the next generation of home video takes hold. I never bought those VHS tapes with an eye on any profit, or even getting my money back - I bought them because I was interested in the MOVIE, and that's the same way I buy DVDs.

Great value if you ask me.

My purpose is to put together a nice film library that I can enjoy for years to come, not to sell them off in a short time or when they start losing value.

not even that....all disney vhs and most criterion laserdisc have bottomed out with a better release on dvd. if you are wanting to have money for future investments i would reccomend putting that 30 a week into the bank, or savings programs...there is money to be made if you can buy cheap and sell high, but i wouldn't quit my day job for it.

I wouldn't mind having a few copy of Salo lying around my house now.

Simply put no. If you are planning to resell a DVD, you are planning to take a loss 90% of the time at least. I have DVDs in my collection that I would sell, if I could get $4 or $5 out of them, but at $1-$3 I will just keep it on the shelf. That is only going to get worse. I never buy new anymore - try to keep all movie cost to around $5 with certain exceptions and TV cost aroun $20 a season or less.

The only ones that will hold value IMO are those fancy box sets that you can get from other regions or the ones that wouldn't be currently available on HD-DVD. I don't think about the money I spent on discs, since I would cry (especially in the laserdisc price realm). I just think about the enjoyment I derived from watching them at the time.

Invest in real estate; at least it won't go down in value and with the magic of equity you can buy practically anything you want.

I've always figured that DVD's really hold no more value than any one person is willing to pay for the DVD. People always ask what this DVD is worth or what that DVD is worth, they will always only be worth what someone is willing to pay. When the next Gen. of home video technology goes mainstream, I'd say that the current format DVD's again will only be worth what someone is willing to pay. There won't be a so called "Price Guide" you know.

If you buying DVD's you should be buying ones that hold value to YOU and not ones you think you'll be able to make a penny on later as chances are your going to be disappointed.

Most DVD will be worthless when the next better technology come out. The only exception may be those DVD that were issued with limited number.

Only buy movies that you enjoy, DVDs are not an investment for your future.

Oh good lord no..buy for the love of watching movies. The value is how you feel while watching and after the end credits..if it made you feel something it has value.
