When I moved from the states to Canada I had a big box full of dvd's and the customs agent just asked if I had any adult movies in the box and I told him no and that was it, he didn't search the box or anything.

There are some titles and themes that are definitely on Canada Customs' no-no list. If you declare that you have adult films, (or are having them mailed here, and customs happens to open the package and notice its an adult dvd), they very well could FF through it to make sure that there is nothing objectionable in it. Luckily, regulations have relaxed quite a bit over the past 10 or 15 years, so the average US porn film should be allowed into Canada with no problems these days (unless it's something with alot of degradation, like Rob Black's films for example. I won't get into descriptions about what isn't allowed in Canada outside of the mature forum though ).

Do they actually check each disc or just look at the artwork?

They likely look at the artwork and title first (and check for the title on their list of forbidden stuff). If it looks like the film could be iffy, then they would scan it. But if it looks like a typical pretty Vivid box or something, they probably wouldn't even bother.
