I'm still scratching my head about why this tanked. I saw many TV spots, but my interest in seeing the film in the theater was in spite of them, not because of them.
I am no fan of Michael Bay, yet I found this to easily be the best effort of his career. To be fair, I do own Criterion's releases of The Rock and Armageddon, and the Vista Series of Pearl Harbor...but mostly for the terrific behind-the-scenes featurettes on them, less so for the films themselves.
Maybe if it had tried for an even more mature handling of the subject--like a COMA + BLADE RUNNER feel--and even been content with an "R" rating (and not just for Scarlett J.'s suggestion not to wear a bra in the bed scene!), it would have found an audience. Of course, my suggestions would move it out of the summer action movie mold.
Still, I see Bay as having a similar problem with Tim Burton: rarely do they shoot scripts built solidly enough to support their visuals.

I actually kinda liked the movie. Hopefully the dvd will be good enough to warrant a purchase. It needs to be 2disc with the length of the film, that way it can be a great transfer and loads of bonus materials.

Early artwork is up at dvdtimes:
http://www.dvdtimes.co.uk/content.php?contentid=58763
.. looks like they're selling Ewan and Scarlett in 'Knight Rider 2005', from the lower half of the cover art. Why oh why couldn't they have stuck with the marginally better theatrical one sheet? There's still hope at least... that they'll ruin it some more that is!
[Studio Exec voice]Hey, I think we can fit in another out-of-place quote below Ewan and Scarlett and above the film title![/Studio Exec voice].

I'll wait for a special edition. I saw the first half in a theater before I had to leave (I know...too bad). I enjoyed what I saw and will definitely buy the DVD, but I have a feeling a special edition won't be far away. I guessed right on I, Robot. We'll see if I'm right on this one.

looks like it may get hacked up...i bet your wishing Criterion did get it now...
excerpt from
USA TODAY artice on DVD re-edits.
Other movies being reconsidered for home viewing:
• Michael Bay's The Island cost $122 million and brought in just $36 million in North America, one of summer's biggest flops. For the Dec. 13 DVD release, DreamWorks will play up the action rather than the story and characters, and will offer a $3-off DVD coupon in People.

And I'm assuming Michael Bay has enough clout in Hollywood that he would be able to stop a re-edit on one of his own films. The man has 5 blockbuster hits and only 1 bomb under his belt. Currently a better box office track record than most directors in Hollywood.
