The Frighteners: Director's Cut - 11.29.05

Considering that Universal is selling two disc sets left and right with 3-8 films in the set for the same retail price as this set there is no reason Universal can't make this film a two disc set to get all the laserdisc material on DVD. This has been one that people have been requesting for years and years. Universal had better do it correctly.

I agree with darkside, as I am sure everyone else does. I was hoping to come across a copy of the laserdisc at some point, but I am not willing to take out a second mortgage. The material is already complete. There are no costs involved in putting this out, except buying the rights if necessary...

Bout fucking time!
I love this movie and its one of my absolute favorites. EVER. And its been that way since it was first released. Long before I knew a thing about LOTR or gave a shit who a director was.
However, given Universal; a studio I loathe and detest, they will fuck this up beyond belief. Why? Because its a movie I love and want and someone will see the need to keep my continuing streak of bad luck going...

I will be picking this up. Very underated film, sadly overlooked at the box office, there is nothing wrong with this film despite it's weak crowd reception in theaters, it's a solid film and one of Peter Jacksons finest. I own the original dvd, and I must comment and say that if you can find it, it's still worth the double dip. The transfer is of reference quality, it's truly very film like and the audio mix is very solid as well. So directors cut aside, the original dvd is worth owning as well.

Here's a nice review of the Laserdisc. I've held out buying the current release for years now in hopes of an SE. This is almost too good to be true. One of my favorite movies of the 90s.

I was just thinking...with that 4 1/2 hour Frighteners documentary, all the documentary footage on the LOTR Extended Editions, and all the King Kong video diaries...you could take a virtual tour of the last ten years of Peter Jackson's life.
Anyway, I hope they release the full thing. I'd probably never find the time to watch it all, but it would be cool to have.

It's been a while for me as well. A friend of mine back in college had the Signature Series LD and I watched the first 2 hours of the documentary. I sure hope it'll be on the DVD because I'm eager to finish it!

DavisDVD is now reporting that The Frighteners will include over four hours of bonus material. Nothing definite, but it's a step in the right direction towards duplicating the laserdisc set.

From DavisDVD:
Here's hoping...

Universal Studios has added the wording "includes over four hours of bonus material written and produced by Peter Jackson" to their listing of The Frighteners Director's Cut. Does this mean the DVD will include the complete documentary from the laserdisc box set? Very possible. There will be enough room on the DVD-18 (dual-layered, dual-sided) for the film and the documentary. However, if Universal counts the two-hour commentary track as part of the bonus materials, the documentary may be split in half. It's certainly happened before (*cough* Jaws), so it may be the case again. We'll just have to wait for an official notice soon.

I was told that the documentary isn't even a full 4 hours but that all the special features on the laserdisc were put together as one because LD's didn't have menus. That the deleted scenes, documentary, still gallery, etc. were all put together. So how long is the actual documentary? I think they can leave out the still gallery and such and the whole thing might actually be on the disc.
