I don't have that set, but it appears to have been released on 11/22/2004.

I sold my season 1-6 sets a while ago (wasn't watching them) but I'm tempted to get this - $139.99 is almost too good to pass up.

I very much agree with you........

Hello. I'm in the UK (Bristol), and planning to buy a complete Buffy set. (The only Buffy DVD I have so far is "Once More With Feeling". What a brilliant episode!) I'm wondering whether the R2 version due out here on Oct 31 is "The Chosen Collection", with the 40th disc. None of the UK web sites taking pre-orders uses that name, and a couple of them say "39 discs", though that could easily be a mistake.

If it doesn't have the bonus disc, I might order the R1 version. It would work out cheaper too (as does almost everything if purchased direct from the US!). But I think I read there are some differences between the R1 and R2 versions. Could someone please tell me the differences.

As I understand it, the R2 discs are widescreen from Season 4 on. Is that true of the R1 discs too? I definitely want as much widescreen as possible. Yes, I know Joss said they're meant to be seen in 4:3. But what would he know? ;-)

He would know how he wants his show to be seen. Except for OMWF, all the R1 discs have been 4x3 per Joss' wishes.

For any further thoughts on the subject, please see my sig.

Of course. But, on the other hand, I know my own tastes better than Joss knows them.

Thanks for the info. In that case, I'll definitely get the R2 discs, with apologies to Joss.

By the way, I'm interested in your comment that OMWF was an exception. I have the R2 OMWF disc and I'd noticed that the picture appears to have been zoomed out so the edges are cropped (on a 16:9 TV). When I watch the title sequence, some of the text is lost, e.g. IIRC I see something like "Once More With Feelin". I first watched this episode on the R2 Season 6 DVD set, and I don't remember any such cropping there. I can't tell for sure whether the rest of the episode is cropped, as it was a couple of months between seeing the two versions, but some of the framing does seem odd. Anyway, I just thought I'd mention this little oddity.

It so better not or I'll be so pissed off. I dropped a hell of a lot of money on the R2 collection just to have them re-release it with that extra disc.

Coming back to the subject of aspect ratio, would I be right in thinking that the 4:3 version is just a centre cut-out of the 16:9, rather than a pan-and-scan? If so, then buying the 16:9 version would still leave me the option of watching it in 4:3, by setting the DVD player to 4:3 CCO. Then I could compare the two formats and see the difference for myself. (Watching a centre cut-out would give me a slightly lower resolution picture compared with the original 4:3 version, but I don't think I'd notice the difference.)

Yes, the 4:3 version is a center-extraction from the middle of the 16:9 film frame. There is no artificial panning.

The "4:3 Standard" setting on a DVD player only works if the widescreen DVD is flagged to allow that option. Very few are. The Buffy discs are not flagged that way. Whether you set your DVD player for "4:3 Letterbox" or "4:3 Standard" you will get a letterboxed picture.

If your DVD player has a zoom feature you can probably magnify the picture so that the center fills the screen.

Oops, silly me. For some reason I'd got it into my head that DVD players have a centre cut-out setting. I must have been thinking of my PVR, which does have such a setting.

No tichtich, you're right in a way - if you set your DVD player to 4:3 Pan and Scan, it will centre-cut from the 16:9 FHA image, but only if the disc has been authored that way.

As JoshZ states, buffy has been flagged to letterbox the image, regardless which setting your DVD player is set to.

Doubtful. They may just be available for import purposes.

At first glance, it sounds underwhelming, and they'll likely be fifteen minutes or less with old interviews. Great.

Oh, well. I'll be mainly buying this for the space-saving and the price, anyway (and because I sold off all my seasons for around $150).

I got a $25 reward certificate from Amazon, so I took the plunge and ordered the set for $105. Great price, but hopefully a great show for a total blind buy from me!

I haven't seen this mentioned anywhere... just how 'limited' will this set be? Has anyone heard how many they will be making?

Thinking about getting this-even seeing this thread-literally causes me to begin drooling.

I sold off my sets over a month ago and I need my Buffy back.

The amazon price was so good, I ordered it with next day shipping. Screw the extra $10, I just want this box set NOW.

Would be nice to have a big set like this. I mean, compared to what I originally paid for all of the seasons together, this is a steal. But the one thing that worries me, is that there are so many discs. Buffy sets have had a history of having a lot of floaters with a lot of people. Not sure if I'd want to buy it just to have to replace a ton of boxes due to the number of discs that have the potential to be loose in each set.

Actually, you should feel lucky you did. I also pre-ordered it at $129.99, but discovered the other day that the listing has shot up to $169.99 (with my pre-order remaining the same). Hopefully the $170 isn't indicative of first week prices at B&M stores.

If it is indeed like the R2 box then it's pretty unlikely that you'll get floaters since the dics are basically sandwiched in plastic holders with no room or play to slide anywhere.
