It's not falling sales, it's lower than expected sales. The stock market is based on estimates and assumptions. The sales assumptions for the 2 movies mentioned were apparently too high, so it looks like sales are bad. That's why you can't use this story to figure out if sales were good or not. Incredibles may have sold more than most movies, but their assumption was even higher, and caused stock market issues. I don't know, maybe they are falling. My point is that the news story mentioned doesn't give us this info, it's just about the stock of the companies.

Another way to look at it: If assumptions had been lower than actual, the stock would've gone up with no change to the sales figures.

With supposed declining dvd sales, I think the studios treat this issue like they do with declining music sales. Maybe it is not that big of an issue, but at least here in Los Angeles, there are many used stores. Why pay retail on something if you can get it cheaper used, sometimes still sealed. That's not going to count as a sale on whatever system they use to track sales. Also ebay sales wouldn't show up on their charts, either. Industry people themselves are the worst because they can usually get free copies or heavily discounted ones. Regardless, dvds that are on sale at target, best buy, etc, always have empty spaces on the shelf when I go there.

I've tried to cut back on buying, but when I try to get out, Deep Discount has a 20% off sale and I get pulled back in again. I love having the movies at my disposal. Having a catalogue title with a DTS mix is exciting. To make space in my apartment I have resorted to putting the older discs in booklets that would normally hold cds. I save all the sleeves and inserts and get rid of the plastic covers.

DVD sales have not declined at all. They're still on the rise actually. It's the rate of increase that declining.
