Yup, September is a good month for S.E. Hinton. All we need now are Special Edition's of Tex and That Was Then...This Is Now.

I remember posting about this a few years ago when I read it in an Entertainment Weekly. They said it would be out in a year. I can't remember when it was (and it isn't coming up in a search), but it was longer than a year ago.

I can't wait.

Yup - this has been rumored for quite some time (I first recall hearing about it back in 2003 for a possible 20th Anniversary release).

Wait, wait, wait a goddamn minute.... What the hell is this rock soundtrack horseshit? Did anyone read the actual Variety report?

'Outsiders' in for re-release, DVD
Coppola classic headed for theaters this fall

By SCOTT HETTRICK
Warner Home Video's DVD edition of "The Outsiders" will get a limited theatrical run prior to its Sept. 20 release. Director Francis Ford Coppola has added 22 minutes of footage and a rock soundtrack to the 1983 drama and has rounded up most of the Brat Pack-plus cast for bonus features....

Are there gonna be CGI midgets added in, too?

This is great news and I'm sure the 'rock soundtrack' is just a miswrite about the rock songs("Gloria") used in the film. I doubt they will actually change the score to a rock score. If so,then this is just wrong.

Anyway I will not be getting rid of my original dvd just in case. Also has anyone noticed the wierd look of the letterbox bars on this release? It basically looks like it was matted twice with slightly different colored bars.

There should be a commentary too. Diane Lane mentioned doing one in an interview a couple of years ago.

It would be cool if they had a book on tape type thing where you can listen to the book on the DVD. I probably would never utilize such a feature, but I think it would be cool none the less.

Anyway, I sold off my copy a while back so I'll be picking this one up. I love this movie and the book.

So you wouldn't listen to it, but you'd feel satisfied just knowing it's on there?

Great news! I never saw this at the theater either so I may check it out. I'll definitely be picking up the dvd, though.

BURBANK, Calif., June 13, 2005 - The Outsiders: The Complete Novel -- Francis Ford Coppola’s 1983 film adaptation of the renowned S.E. Hinton best seller -- arrives September 20 from Warner Home Video (WHV) as a restored Two-Disc DVD.

Coppola, a five-time Academy Award®-winner, has added 22 minutes to The Outsiders, including a new beginning and an ending which is more true to the book and enriches the characters’ relationships.

Said Coppola, "The Outsiders is a teenage epic, beloved by so many young people -- junior high school students especially -- and it’s often their first important experience with literature. It’s always bothered me that, in the rush to distribution, so much of the novel was edited out. Once, after showing the original version to my granddaughter's high school class, where so many kids asked 'but what about the other parts of the story?’ -- I resolved I would restore it to be the complete novel. I just felt the film would be better if it played much longer. Warner Bros. agreed with this thought, and we both became excited to bring the entire story to the screen."

Coppola has also added a brand new rock ‘n’ roll soundtrack with six songs from Elvis Presley and from Van Morrison, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, The Marketts, Sandy Nelson and others. "I had always hoped the film could have an all Elvis Presley score," noted Coppola, "which turned out not to be possible at the time. Now we have reconceived the score, based on what these characters would be listening to, while still retaining the movie’s great original song, ‘Stay Gold’ by Carmine Coppola and Stevie Wonder."

The impressive array of young actors who starred in The Outsiders include C. Thomas Howell, Matt Dillon, Diane Lane, Ralph Macchio, Rob Lowe, Patrick Swayze, Emilio Estevez, Tom Cruise and Leif Garrett. "So many of the young and talented cast have gone on to great success that I think the new length will be that much more fascinating to audiences," Coppola added.

The idea for The Outsiders began with a letter to Francis Ford Coppola from a school librarian in Fresno, California, stating that the faculty and students had nominated the director to make a movie of their favorite novel; the letter was personally signed by 110 students. "What I am most proud of in this new release is that the film is now the truest expression of the novel. And of course, that I was able to be responsive to these kids’ letter," said Coppola.

S.E. Hinton’s book has sold 12 million copies to date and has been translated into 21 languages. It is taught in schools nationwide and continues to find new fans with each new generation. The Outsiders was first published in 1967, when Hinton was only 17. Her other popular titles are Rumble Fish (Coppola’s second Hinton adaptation), That Was Then, This Is Now and Tex.

The movie version of The Outsiders -- like the book -- struck a powerful chord with audiences, capturing the intense feelings of being caught between childhood and adulthood, and not belonging anywhere. A classic coming-of-age story, The Outsiders is set in gritty Tulsa, Oklahoma during the early 1960s and centers on a teen rivalry between two opposing groups: the Greasers (poor kids) and the Socs (socials, the rich kids).

C. Thomas Howell stars as Ponyboy, the youngest of three orphaned boys who are members of the Greasers. When Ponyboy and his friend Johnny (Ralph Macchio) get into a deadly confrontation one night, the two are forced to flee from the law and must grow up quickly. Matt Dillon stars as the tough-as-nails leader of their group and Patrick Swayze appears as Ponyboy's oldest brother.

The Outsiders: The Complete Novel will be in widescreen and will be filled with previously unavailable bonus content, including new commentaries by the director and several of the actors; three new documentaries, three featurettes, deleted scenes and more. The Outsiders: The Complete Novel will be available for $26.99 SRP.

Limited theatrical engagements will begin September 9 in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego, Washington, D.C., Boston, Dallas, Chicago and Minneapolis.

What's the deal with Emilio Estevez lately? He didn't appear with the rest of the Breakfast Club gang at the MTV awards and it doesn't look like he's participating in this either.

Awesome news. I'm especially pumped to see this on the bis screen come Sept. 9th!

The cast commentary (sans poor Emilio) sounds like a real treat!

Looking forward to seeing it in the theater and getting the disc if I like it.

I'm glad to see the longer length, as I thought it could have used more from the book also, but wary of the new music score. Hopefully it will work.

does this new music thingy mean it that the old movie with music as we knew it growing up won't be there? or is this just the same music just trumped up more?

I'm wondering about this too. I hope they leave Gloria alone (Which appears at the beginning of the movie) because to tell you the truth, I can't think of The Outsiders without this song!

I'm guessing they'll replace or re-insert the new music over other certain sequences like:
-Dallas driving in his car
-The Drive-in
-At Darry's house
-At Dallas's apt. building (The song that plays in the current version doesn't sound "50's" at all)

Have to admit it would be kinda cool to hear Link Wray's Rumble before the big fight!

Well, goddammit. I guess we have to deal with another "here's what the director originally envisioned" load of shit. Couldn't they have put the original remastered on there as well? Don't get me wrong, I'm curious to see it, especially with the cut footage back in, but it's just not gonna be the same with the songs changed up. Gonna have to hold on to the original disc. Well, it's not all too surprising, I guess, seeing as how Coppola and Lucas are old buddies.
