My 100th DVD

It took about two years and one month, but I bought my 100th DVD today: Star Trek Insurrection SCE, along with #101, Stripes Extended Cut.

I intentionally put Insurrection into my DVD Profiler first because I wanted a Trek film to be my 100th. Hey, I'm a sentimental Trekkie.

I know, 100 in two years is hardly anything around these parts. Some of you may have reached a hundred DVDs in a tenth of the time it took me.

So does anyone else keep track of their "landmark" DVD purchases? 100, 250, 500, etc? Do you try to fit "special" films into those slots?

It won't be too long until I'm going to need more storage space myself.

100?!?!?

Sorry!!! I couldn't resist!!

Congrats! I quit keeping track of such things a while back! Nowadays I buy more TV sets so do I count each disc in the set or count the set as one disc?!?!

I just stick the new dvd's on the shelf and don't worry about it!!

Take care all!!

... don't worry about the chuckles. I was expecting that. Hey, if I can make some people laugh, does that count as a good deed?

I guess I'm picky about what I buy. I have to really like it. Or I have to kind of like it and the price be right.

Based on my last look at the release list, I won't be buying much of anything for a while now, unless I start working on my short list of older movies I want to get eventually. There's also a few I'm waiting for new releases to buy.

Unless I buy Hunter Season 2 in July, it won't be until September that I'll make my next buys - Lost Season One and Toy Story.

p.s. I guess one of the things I should have said first was "No, I'm not missing a zero. It's 100."

I'm about to hit 300, but I leave out the numbers in Profiler because they don't "stick" as discs get sold or given away because of new versions. I thought 300 was going to be Million Dollar Baby, but I'm going to reach it before that comes out.

Not counting the ones I no longer have, your rate is about the same as mine-50 per year.

The 100th DVD club? Is that like when you have to sit at the little kids table for family holiday dinners?

And I should add that in my profiler I've got six DVDs for which I couldn't enter purchase dates, so they don't have numbers. So Insurrection is given #94, but it's actually 100.

And that's 100 titles. As for individual discs, who knows. I've got so many multi-disc sets, as we all do.

It is difficult to say what mine was because I don't really recall but I believe John Cassavetes: Five Films CC was around that time period where I had reached 100 so I am going to say that since it is my favorite thing I own (even though I can't get the theatrical cut of Chinese Bookie out of the case, believe I cracked some of the center trying the other day).

When I used to work at a Laserdisc/Home Theater store in the San Francisco/Bay Area, I used to think that about LD's. At my high point on LD's I was probably around 400 to 500. (I started collecting them in 1982 with Star Trek II and Tron...)

Once I saw properly presented DVD's from Sony, in early 1997, it was a relitively quick dash to the 1000 mark... about 4 years. It's amazing what can happen when you start with a format from day 1.

Better to have 100 dvds you love and will rewatch frequently than 1000 that are just sitting on a shelf collecting dust.

But they look so beautiful sitting there collecting dust.

Altimus Prime, no offense, but why do we care that you hit the 100 DVD mark? I'm not trying to be mean but if everybody posted threads concerning which century mark they hit this week, this forum would be a waste of time.

Congrats! It took me four years to reach the 100th mark (start collecting in 1999, reached 100 on 2003). But then I bought more than 100 DVDs on the year 2004 alone.

There was a thread similar to this about a month ago here.

http://www.dvdtalk.com/forum/showthr...ghlight=1000th

I stated in there that I thought it was silly to hold off on purchasing a dvd just so it has a certain # in the collection, and I'll say it again.

room service... room service...

... sorry, channeling Spaceballs...

I didn't really delay buying my 100th DVD. It just happened that I was nearing that point, and Insurrection came out. I didn't hesitate to buy it, or Stripes.

I guess I primarily started this thread to see if anyone tries to have certain movies be at certain milestones when it's possible, whether that involves going to extremes or not to make that possible.

Regarding laser discs, I remember a high school physics teacher I had was using them in the classroom, and that was in 1988-89, IIRC.

I do the "milestone" thing usually with good movies.... I number my entire collection (usually only about once every three months) so I'll try and make the good movies have decent places in the collection. I do it a lot less now that I have a bigger collection...

ie. 100 - Jaws 150 - Sopranos Season 1 200 - Close Encounters 300 - Buffy Season 1 450 - ET 1000 - Star Wars Trilogy 1100 - Angel Season 5

Hey, dvd aficianado's everywhere can poke fun at you only having 100 dvds in your collection, but that is quite a huge collection of dvds. Think about how much time you'd have to set to watch them all, or how many you will watch. It makes more sense to only have a few of the dvds that you will watch, with a decent replay factor, when some people have 1,000's of them and all they are there for is show and to collect dust. I think a dvd collection with a 100 or so dvds is a more reasonable collection if you know you will watch them again. My collection has to be near 500 or so, I am not to sure, I lost count. At least you are responsible enough with your collection to keep count.

I'm thinking about doing a major culling with my collection pretty soon. I am going to try and stick around 300-350 DVD's and 100 LD's.
