Beware of DVDsoon. They've lost their main distributor, cancelled a bunch of orders, and are in the process of revamping their invoicing. People who purchase from them regularly are pissed. Order at your own risks, at least for now.

Yoda,
I assume you're talking about the "closed-captioned" subtitles? That was the first thing I looked at and, IMHO, it wasn't really close-captioned (this is basing it only on the Canadian dvd). It does mention the occassional "(yelling), (groans)" and "(English)" when a character starts talking in non-Thai. I may have missed it but I didn't find the "(Techno)" when the background music started playing.

I bought the "tin case" edition from Future Shop in Canada. I think the subtitles are beyond horrible. But the action sequences are awesome!!!
I noticed on the back of the DVD case doesn't mention anything in french... but when I'm viewing the special features menu, it says for two of the options "French". One for a music video, and another for that performance Jaa did for some theatre crowd. But, for both the video and performance, they're both in English. Also, on the front and back, there's no metion of it being a "French" version. Strange.
Also, for other Canadians... is there more than the one version that's being offerend at Future Shop? English, French, Cut, UnCut?
Thanks.

There are 3 R1 releases: The Fox (US), the Alliance/Universal (Canada), and the Crystal Films (Canada/Quebec). The later is in french only. All 3 have the same so-called Luc Besson cut.

I was going to pick this up as a blind buy (I wanted to see it during it's theatrical run but never got around to it) I've been reading what you guys have been saying about the dvd and at first I was turned off, all due to the closed captioned subtitles. But after hearing nothing but good things from you guys among others about how amazing the fight scenes are, I've decided to pick it up sometime this week.

I haven't watched the entire film yet, but y'all do know that there are two sets of English subtitles on the R1 Ong-Bak disc, right? At the start of the film, in the tree scene...all of the guys start screaming and running toward the tree. With the first set of subtitles on, it says "[All Screaming]" but with the second set of English subtitles (the third on the disc, Spanish is second), this doesn't appear.
Like I said, I'm not sure if the first set is entirely closed-captioned, while the second set is normal...but it did get rid of that very first instance of closed-captioning. I'm going to go finish watching the movie. I'll report back to see if it's clear all the way through.
Update: I'm playing the disc on my PS2, and the third set of subtitles (which comes up on my screen as "Subtitle 3 English") has no subtitles at all. Is this the case with everybody else's discs? Does the third set even show up on your players? I think, if they're all like this, we could complain to Fox and get replacements for defective discs. The back of the box says, "Subtitled in English, Subtitled in Spanish, Captioned." This means, according to the back of the box, there are supposed to be three sets of subtitles: English, Spanish, and English Captioned. On my PS2, there are three options...but only the English Captioned and Spanish work.
Any thoughts? Enough angry emails, and I'm sure they'd do something about it (they did with the Simpsons 6th Season packaging, after all).

I would like a conformation from others since at least it seems like there are 2 subtitle options.

You guys are correct, there appears to be a third subtitle track with nothing on it on mine as well. I really do believe somebody messed this up during the authoring similar to what happened with Ghost in the shell 2: Innocence some months ago.
I did contact fox through their website and got this response:
Hello,
This is the response I have regarding this issue:
Sounds like you might be using the subtitle button instead of using the selections from the menu page. If you go thru the menu page and select subtitles, you'll get the correct SDH track.
Note that on all discs we have the following:
Line 21 (Closed Captions)
SDH (standard English Subtitles)
Spanish Subtitles
There is also a blank track for switching subtitles off when toggling
from the remote. If you use the remote to toggle, you can get to any one
of these tracks. It's easy to lose your bearings so best thing to do is
go back to the menu and select what you want.
Thank you,

I wrote back insisting they were wrong and have not been replied to since. Sounds like a canned generated response if you ask me. If you're unhappy though, complain, and maybe we can get replacments sent, it worked for GITS 2.

Also BTW the email I complained to was a different one from the one posted above which I think only goes to the store. Here's the one I complained to:

To whom it may concern,
I'm writing to inform you that one of the three subtitle selections for your recently released "Ong-Bak: Muai Thai Warrior" disc doesn't work properly. There are three subtitle selections; English Closed Captioned, Spanish Subtitles, and Standard English Subtitles. The last of the three doesn't work. I've tried the disc on two players (my DVD player, and my Playstation 2) using both the "Subtitle" button on my remote, and the set-up on the disc's menu. In all circumstances, I can get only Spanish subtitles and English Closed-Captioned subtitles. Nothing appears when selecting the Standard English Subtitles.
Do you have any information about a replacement disc, as, according to talk around the internet, this seems to be a widespread problem? I was fortunate enough to catch the U.S. premiere of this film back in December of 2004, and I've been eagerly anticipating this release ever since. Needless to say, I'm very disappointed at the fact that I must either watch the film dubbed, or with subtitles that inform me whenever a punch lands, music begins to play, and in some instances...offers a reminder that the main characters are speaking Thai.
Please contact me with any information about a replacement. Thank you.

Sorry to report this, but there is nothing wrong with the R1 DVD. The third subtitle track only contains the words "NONG PRADU VILLAGE," which appear at the very beginning of the film. The English subtitle track is most likely a copy of the closed caption script (I don't have a television with closed captioning ability). Can anybody confirm this?
EDIT: Okay, so there's problems with the film's presentation. I only meant that there's nothing defective with the DVD's subtitle tracks.
