As POed as I am about this. Being a huge fan I have to get it because of the scrapbook and two episodes, and I guess am in the minority here but I actually like the cover art. No, what I mean is that I have the orignals right now, if the transfers is better on the new Ghostbusters 2, I will put the original Ghostbusters with decent transfer into the new case and put the new transfer disc in the old case and sell the new case with the old decent transfer on E-Bay, is it clear now? |
My older post on May 12:
They'll probably both be in pan and scan format this time, but have DTS soundtracks. |

Way to show the fans you care about them. The funny thing is, when people listen to the commentary on Ghostbusters, they're going to hear Harold Ramis mention how Egon is always the one cut when a shot is panned-and-scanned for TV. He comments on how nice it is to finally watch the movie on DVD in widescreen. Oops. --THX |

If this is an example of what Sony will be doing with their own movie catalogue along with MGM, then I'm very scared.

Ghostbusters [update] It seems that the back cover art I posted a few days ago for the upcoming Ghostbusters 1 & 2 Gift Set caused quite a stir among readers and fans. Specifically, if you look closely in the spec grid at the bottom of the packaging it looks like one of the features is listed as being "1.33:1 Fullscreen." Well, I did some digging around and called Sony to find out what this was all about. Strap in, kids. The first Ghostbusters film is being presented fullscreen only. Yes, you read that right. The sequel is anamorphic, but the original is pan & scan. For the life of me, I can't seem to wrap my head around this decision. The press release states that the films feature new transfers - so why is one of Sony's crown jewels being short shrifted with a fullscreen-only presentation? Beats me. The person I talked to didn't have any explanation either other than to give me the customer care line. So maybe we should all call that number and let them know what a terrible decision they've made. I, for one, was going to buy the Gift Set. But now, no way. I know a lot of people are going to be upset about this, so I urge you to be calm and respectful when calling Sony. The phone numbers I was given are 310-244-4000 and 1-800-860-2878. I called the "800" number and the phone tree doesn't seem to lead to any customer complaint option, so you might want to try the first number instead. You can also email them with your thoughts at [email protected] Remember, there's a better chance of fixing this mistake if we all act like civilized people. |
Dammit! And I already sold my old release!
Oh, wait...I didn't. |

I'll be on the phone first thing in the morning
|
I'll call too, I just emailed them.
DVD companies do some really stupid things, but this ranks pretty high..... I could see if they were both presented in teh same aspect ratio.....but the first in pan-scan? geez.. |
What year is this, 2001?
|
Someone needs to photochop the GB2 symbol so the ghost is flipping Sony the bird.
|
It can't be Sony as a whole, they've got the PSP selling like hotcakes, the PS3 looks to be great, and the PS2 is still going strong. I just bought a new Sony DVD player that's been doing great so far playing any problem discs I have. There's got to be some sort of criminally insane rogue agent in their DVD department running amok. And here I thought they were doing so well with those widescreen Japanese language Godzilla discs. I guess I need to hurry up and grab the rest of them before Sony pulls them and replaces them with fullscreen versions with with dubs by the Mayberry allstar choral group.

what the hell? try and watch GB on Comedy Central, panned and scanned to hell...it looks like garbage.

One interesting note, if they include the commentary for GB, Ivan Reitman (I believe) specifically points out a scene in the commentary where he notes that he is so glad to have a widescreen release of the movie and notes that in the scene where the Ghostbusters walk into the hotel, you can't see Harold Ramis' character in the TV versions (he's on the left or right). |
*looks at old DVD set of Ghostbusters...*
Rest easy little ones. You're safe. |

Call me an optimist, but I'm still hoping this is some huge snafu between Sony's publicity site and the art department (responsible for the back cover). I mean, this is Sony we're talking about. The company pouring BILLIONS into Blu-ray HiDef. Why would they opt for a fullscreen transfer when they do widescreen and fullscreen for nearly every major release??
My hope is that this will either be cleared up on its own, or by us complaining incessently. It worked for "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory." |

My hope is that this will either be cleared up on its own, or by us complaining incessently. It worked for "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory." Sony is the biggest pile of crap studio out there. They should have their film library taken away from them and given to someone who gives a shit about it. While you all are bitching to them about this fiasco, be sure to remind them of their WS/FS to P&S only re-releases with the same UPC number. This is the best case of the "Corperate Mongoloid Machine" in full swing. I bet if you looked at their Board of Directors they'd all be soccer moms with IQ's of 10 ...collectively. |
