Wal-Mart - DVD Discs made in Mexico?

Last night I bought 3 DVDs from Wal-Mart in the 2 for $11 bin - Fatal Attraction, Bad News Bears, and A Night at the Roxbury - all 3 said "Disc made in Mexico" in small print on the back on the cellophane. Anybody ever run into any problems with these types of DVDs? Everything else about the case, inserts and disc look on the up and up. I even saw a Lemony Snickett disc (the new movie!) in the same bin (with the same Made in Mexico print on the back of the case!).

I actually noticed this today with a $5.50 title (Serpico). Not sure what made me notice it, but yeah...I went ahead and bought it.

Lots of DVDs are "Made In Mexico" ..... the new Joan Of Arcadia released today has a similar sticker on it, as does my as-yet unopened Collateral.

Paramount and Universal are now making discs in Mexico. Probably other studios as well.

What he said.

Nearly all of Universal's DVDs are made in Mexico, as are a bunch of others. It doesn't mean anything.

Why would any disc made in Mexico have any problems? Other DVDs are made in Taiwan, so what? Most companies make their products outside the US and there is no problem in quality.

I have 5-6 DVD's from Walmart's bargain bin that are made in Mexico and didn't have any problems with them.

Is it really true that Joan comes in PCM stereo only?

Am I the only one bothered by this? DVD's were one of the few items I could count on being made in the USA. This is sad. Last fall I first noticed this, around Halloween. I bought a new big time release[can't recall the title] and a bag of BRACH's candy corn and I was shocked to see both my dvd and candy was made in Mexico!!!!

my friend works at a dvd factory and i asked him about this awhile ago. he said that a lot of the discs are made in mexico then shipped to them in spindles where they make the cases and inserts and then wrap them in the cellophane with a stamp that says made in mexico. and then sometimes just the cases come to them while they make the disc. ither way i dont care as long as it works.

You need to tell your friend that they are forgetting the inserts in a lot of releases.

why does it matter if they are made in mexico? are you afraid that you'll open your new dvd boxset and find a chimichanga instead of a dvd?

I have noticed that some of my spicier DVDs, like Secretary and 9 1/2 Weeks, are all made in Mexico.

I hate to break the news to you, but even the few things still being made IN the USA are being made by Mexican people.

I was only wondering since I thought that maybe they were lower quality types of discs (poor transfers, ect), since they are in the 2 for $11 bin. But what a relief to know they are just as good as made in the USA ones. And yeah, they don't come with inside inserts!

That's the funniest thing I've heard all week. Someone paranoid about Mexicans making his DVDs and his candy corn. I'm guessing you don't eat Mexican food? You're missing out, buddy.

As far as the quality of DVDs made in Mexico, believe it or not, people aren't completely incompetent down there. All the major studios like Fox, Warner, and Paramount release the same discs down there as up here...sometimes even better, including DTS tracks and more extras. Sure, there are some shitty labels that put out shitty transfers of good films in Mexico, but don't we have some shitty labels here in the US also? And as someone else pointed out here, there are a ton of things (primarily electronics) that are made in Mexico and sold here in the US.

Mexican candy corn......what a horrid thought.

The shirt I'm wearing right now was made in Bangladesh. Eek!

A disc "made in Mexico" doesn't mean it's a bootleg. It just means the studio is taking advantage of cheap unskilled labor.

IIRC, Ford makes cars in Mexico and Canada. Heck, my 2000 Nissan is probably more of a domestic car (designed in California, built in Tennessee, high percentage of American-made parts) than some Fords.

I had Mexican food yesterday. I think they shipped the beans from Mexico, cause my stomach was upset last night.

---------------------

I have noticed the little clear sticker thingies, but I don't bother worrying.

I think you just mean "cheap" labor. The same skill it takes to make a DVD exists no matter what country the DVD is made in.
