Aside from the lack of DTS (which was just awesome on the original), this set looks pretty sweet. Definitely going to be grabbing it in August.

Wow... This set looks nice. I wasn't planning on getting it but I am sold now. I will keep my 2-disc as well since I got it fairly cheap awhile back from Columbia House.

Well, here again, there's a fair share amount of cover bashing, but no alternative suggestions other than the original art was "better". I'll ask again. What would you rather have? More of a sillouetted look like the first one, or what?

A little concerned about the deleted scenes markers...that better be optional.

They were in the Alien Quad set. They're turned on/off in the options menu.

As i said, i prefer the pose on the current release. It's the same pose that was in the posters for the film, with Maximus looking subdued and more poised. It looks far classier then him in a yelling/action pose. Still unsure what was puzzling.

Well, OK, that's a start. Although that poster is nearly the same as what they've chosen for the EE, just a different pose by Crowe.

The cover art is a little goofy. Still, the specs sound great, and that's what matters.

Well, I've alwasy felt that the original theatrical cut was missing a few things, especially after seeing the deleted scenes from the first disc. So I'll be more than happy to grab this new set.

Well, alright, but between the two covers, both have emotional poses, your's is of sadness and/or humility, while the studio's depicts glory (during one of his arena victories).

I'm curious about all the "push-back", Mike...you asked what other poses DVDTalkers would like, then when one is presented, you dismiss it out of hand. I supported my choice with the subjective opinion that I prefer the emotion and granduer conveyed by my selection over the studio's. Obviously, the studio will do as it pleases here but why the irritation with those who might have preferred differently?

I'm not pushing back at all. And I didn't dismiss your suggestion out of hand at all. I just said that the poster that you linked to, and the official art only differed in the pose they used for Crowe. If you look at the background, it's more or less the same. The same buildings are used except flipped horizontally. And the official one has the Roman army while your's has the collesium.

What my gripe is that all too often, cover-art is released that looks cool as hell to me, and then multitudes of opiners say that the cover-art sucks, without giving their own opinions as to what they'd prefer.

The fact that what you suggested and what they actually went with, shows that there's actually some level of agreement with the over-all look, but just differs by the particular foreground pose they use of Russell "Maximus" Crowe.

What I tend to see is that people are very hesitant to accept change. The first release of Gladiator has been around for several years now and people have been accustomed to the cover-art of that set. So now that this new 3-disc set has been announced, people come out and dismiss this new art (right out of hand), because it (presumably) isn't the same as the old art.

BTW, I tend to see this setiment more from those who post at DVDAnswers than from those who post here at DVDTalk. I just get tired of people saying cover-art sucks without offering up their own opinions as to what might be better. It's in the "OK, smart-ass, let's see you do better" category.

It's no biggie, Mike, I just felt like you were asking for people to offer constructive alternatives and, when I did, you put me on the defensive about my choice. It's cool, though, I understand your frustrations. I don't have a strong dislike for the art the studio chose--it was part of the original design art for the film's theatrical release--but I prefer a pose that highlights the film's more stately qualities than its overtly violent ones...
