Ultimately, content is king and in that regard, the R1 seems to be superior if, for no other reason, that it also includes the original theatrical cut.

But it's not like it will be impossible to find. Plus, I believe the 1 disc version just dropped the second disc. Still has DTS.

Just received my order from DDD with one badly crushed corner
Looks like it's getting replaced ASAP.

so does the EE add more to the movie ala "Lord of the Rings" trilogy or it is inconsequential? because i am interested, but hate the fact of losing the DTS so i would get it, but might rather watch the TE.

The Extended Version of GLADIATOR is a wonderful version of an already great film in my opinion. I think this Extended Cut improves on the film greatly - adding more character moments particularly for Commodus (Jaoquin Phoenix) and Lucilla (Connie Nielsen), more battle carnage and more battle aftermath footage. The drawback is that much of this footage was seen as deleted scenes on the original 2 disc DVD release (although that was poor non-anamorphic video while this is pristine looking!). However, there is some new stuff here and there and there is also some deleted scenes on the old DVD that are NOT in the Extended Cut or on this DVD at all (the lions feeding on the Christians and the treasure chest moments being two such examples). All in all, I thought the extra scenes improved the film without making the already long film drag. A great film made greater.

interestingly the extended cut is not R-rated, which either means Dreamworks didn't bother submitting the new cut for a MPAA rating (cost effective) or they slipped in some of the more extreme gore (that was scene prior in the first DVD's pressing "deleted footage montage" clip) back into the film (i.e, the impalement scene)

also a warning to new viewers, there is a lovely spoiler in the booklet that comes with the movie
I hate when studios assume that everyone that buys this has already seen the movie.

I watched the Hell Unleashed scene in the theatrical in DTS on the original disc and then in the DD5.1 on the new release and they sounded the same to me.
So for those of you like me who can rarely tell a difference between DTS and DD 5.1, the new soundtrack will be fine for you. Probably is reason for audiophiles to hold on to the original release though.

Great set so far. The extras are up there with another favorite set of mine, by many of the same collaborators (Black Hawk Down SE). I'm keeping my original OOP 2disc and turning this into a 5 disc Stinkeye Collector's Edition.

i have a freezing problem on my samsung player. I just watched the first battle and another battle (the one before the " my name is..." speech). I'll try it again to see if its the disc (its not scratched) or the player.

From the digital bits review:
"and for the extended cut it identifies the deleted footage as you watch the film - a nice touch" .... nice touch? I don't know how they are "identifying" the deleted footage but it sounds like a distraction to me! Can anyone clarify??
I loved Gladiator but had planned on NOT double dipping for this. After reading the whole review, I think I just changed my mind ... I WAS ENTERTAINED!!!!!
