It's already been done. It's called The Criterion Collection.

Forced advertisments and that one very painful scene in American Me are one in the same.

Your attempts to defend your point in this issue, while mind boggling as they are, are getting weaker and weaker. Please re-read what you typed there.

Do you make your living from the commercial industry, because you seem to have a real hard-on to defend them.

Yeah, one gets tired of reading the "just turn your head an ignore" it point of view on everything.

I re-read it. And? It's true. I usually talk to my friends during the in-theatre commercials. I also sometimes use that time to go to the bathroom. What's so crazy about any of this? If this boggles your mind, you probably shouldn't so boldly advertise having such a small mind.

Oh god. Yeah, because I have a different opinion than some and I'm not a typical "I'm on the internet now so I'm going to whine about everything and act like everything I dislike is the end of the world" poster, I must be some kind of plant.

And I get tired of reading the "the very existence of [whatever I happen to dislike] makes my eyes bleed and Baby Jesus cry and goes back in time to rape my childhood" point of view on everything. So what?

just a little rant - I have to say that i have virtually stopped attending movies @ my local plex b/c every film is heralded with some 15 minutes of advertising crap. Just thinking ablout this makes me seethe. On the off chance that i attend, I arrive some 15 minutes late to avoid the constant barrage of inane big screen buy-me-get-me-try-me-you-cant-live-without-me shit. I had previously found solace in cable and cinema to avoid this very thing. For a while, i was time shifting with vcr and screening out the commercials. I am alarmed that I now find i am forced to endure more inescapable crap when viewing dvd. Is anything sacred? I agree w/ the previous poster - this is indefensible given the current state of high ticket prices. It wouldnt be so bad if the advertising was at least partially subsidizing my movie experience. This however does not appear to be the case as movie ticket prices continue to rise in tandem with the amount of air time designated for big screen commercials. I just wind up feeling cheated when forced to endure this and simply fantasize about billing all offending parties involved (theater owners, studios, advertising execs, etc) for the very major imposition on my time

Yet another good reason to own a DVD-Burner... Perhaps standalone DVD player manufacturers can give us what we want in future product releases: easilly hackable players, enabling Prohibited user operations to be circumvented. Problem is quickly solved... The only remaining problem will be the sacrifice of valubable disc space to the advertising goons, sucking precious quality out of our beloved films!

Absolutely repulsive and indicative of American Capitalism at its worst.

Yes, and falling over yourself to defend greedy billionaires who force people to sit through 15+ minutes of ads before they can watch the movie they paid for, shows just how open minded you are.

Yes, me saying that I talk to my friends during in-theatre commercials is me just going crazy and falling over myself. I'm going totally nuts here. Look at me go! Someone stop me before I break something.

If you think that running a commercial on a screen counts as "forcing" people to do something, that really says it all. But, hey, don't let me burst your bubble if you enjoy overdramatizing every little thing you dislike. We now return you to your regularly scheduled net whining...

If I knew exactlly when the actual movie was going to start, then I would be willing to step outside while the comercials are on.However, since they can last from 5-20 minutes (or longer?) this could be risky.I could step out for 20 minutes and that night there may only be 5 minutes of comercials. Then I miss 15 minutes of a movie I paid to see.So I guess I am forced to watch them ,because of my own unwillingness to risk missing the opening of a film.

If they are on a dvd, Its not that big of a deal.Start the dvd and walk out of the room to do whatever, then when you get back the comercials are over and your at the dvd menu. Not ideal to me, but livable. If they start after You hit play on the menu and before the movie, then I'm stuck watching them.Atleast they aren't cutting comercials into a movie every 15 minutes like on TV.(YET)

My predicament exactly. The powers-that-be know that people are going to get to the theater well before the showtime to ensure a good seat, so what better time to bombard them with annoying ads? If you wait till the last minute to get to the theater to miss these ads, you'll be sitting in the first row against the wall.

I don't want to own a movie that I want to watch frequently and be forced to see the same piece of shit ads over and over again. 10-15 minutes of forced ads is a huge waste of time when I just want to get down to watching. Even if i am physically capable of getting up and heading out of the room it is beside the point. Now, as technology progresses I hope that they will design discs that will force the viewer (if they have to force us) to watch the ads once and on subsequent playbacks the disc will unlock the menu from the get go.

This is such a non-issue it's not even funny. DVDs are incredibly cheap nowadays. If 5 minutes of crap I can fastforward through is going to keep prices down, I can live with it.

If my LOTR extended editions had forced trailers I'd be a little upset but not much (I got them pretty cheap too)

I don't know about all of you but convenience is a big reason I buy dvd's. I can watch a movie or tv show anytime I want. If a dvd has 5-10 min of forced commercials, that is an inconvenience. Think about people with children that have limited time in their day to squeeze in such nicities. This kills it.

For example, I live close enough to work that I go home for lunch. Almost every day I watch a tv show on dvd. My lunch time is limited, if there were forced commercials I wouldn't have time to squeeze an episode in on my break.

Make no mistake, this IS a big deal. I agree with the analogy of the CDs and Books. This is so wrong.

I am ok with the DVD's that let you fast forward through the ads but the ones refered to in this thread are DVD's that wont let you fast forward and make you wait till the ad is over to start your movie.

I won't fall into the same trap that others fell into and explain why forced trailers are a bad thing....

I challenge you to explain why forced trailers are a good thing.

I e-mailed Alliance Atlantis on this issue - and he're is their response:

Thank you for your comments regarding the Alliance Atlantis DVD release of Finding Neverland.

We have been including ad spots on our DVDs on an occasional basis for several years now, as have other DVD distributors. This is the first time we have had complaints on this issue. We appreciate your feedback and will give your comments serious consideration for future releases.

If you have any further inquiries regarding Alliance Atlantis home video releases, please don't hesitate to contact us. Thank-you again for your correspondence.
I'll be signing the petition - to show that I'm not the only one complaining.
