Replay Value of TV on DVD?
 

I have a few sets that I enjoyed watching, but seemed more like one-time fare than something I would watch again. Partly because they're too long, and partly because the 1st watch is about it being new and edgy, but the 2nd 3rd 4th are about enjoyment. Ones that stick out are Buffy, Angel, Sopranos, Six Feet Under, Band of Brothers. A lot of which is really good TV, but just cant see myself watching it again.

The TV I seem to watch again (I know lots will disaprove): Simpsons, West Wings, Friends, Futurama, South Park, Family Guy. Comedies I suppose, but lighter fare, for sure.

Agree/disagree/recommend please.

I get more replay than I thought I would. Stuff like the Simpsons, South Park, Family Guy, Sealab 2021, etc. is very rewatchable.

The more dramatic shows I usually watch and put aside for a year or two and then watch them again when the storylines aren't as fresh in my mind.

I have been debating this stuff myself. Shows I really enjoyed growing up like A-Team are fun, but when am I going to watch it again. Maybe 5-10 years. Do you keep them? I mean they may never get another realease. They may be readily available. I am really torn. Futurama, South Park, etc get watched off and on so it is easy to keep those.

It is really tough with some sets. My wife bought every season of Buffy and Angel and I really question whether she will ever watch them all again. However, when it is a favorite show of yours it is worth owning. For instance I have watched all of season one and two of Columbo. I probably won't want to watch the entire sets again, but I guarantee there are several episodes on each set i will want to watch again. I think its worth owning them for that reason.

I recently bought 24 when it was $15 and after watching the whole season it is one I really can't see myself ever watching again. I have gotten very addicted to TV season sets and it can really get out of control if you are not careful. However, as long as the sets are around $30 I don't think you can beat the value of them even if you only watch the series once.

Yeah, same here. To me it kind of depends on the type of show. All of my sets are either sci-fi/fantasy or espionage thrillers. I can see rewatching the sci-fi stuff, perhaps less-so for the thrillers, because once you know how they turn out, what's the point in watching them again, but I can see years from now, rewatching them.

I have so much TV-on-DVD, that it's hard to find the time to watch them ONCE. I think when the NewsRadio DVDs come out, that'll be my final TV purchase for a while (though I'll probably change my mind before long). It's not a knock on the quality of those shows, it's more a time factor than anything else.

It obviously depends on the kind of show, but TV-on-DVD generally has far higher replay value for me than movies.

Yeah, for me, it's easier to commit to a half hour, or even (sometimes) an hour.

Of all the shows I have, 'The Office' gets the most play. Which is weird, because there are less episodes of that than most season sets I have.

I'm still at the point where I've seen every 'Simpsons' so much that I don't pop it on often, but I do sometimes throw on 'South Park' or 'Futurama'.

My TV-on-DVD is basically non-existent compared to a lot of other collectors. But Band of Brothers gets a heckuva lot of replay (Just re-watched a few episodes yesterday)

Drat, I left out the one set that gets the most play out of all my DVDs. The Sports Night Complete Series. After watching it all the way through once you can easily pick and episode here or there and watch them at any time. Love the show.

i love my tv on dvd. i can watch the shows at my convinience, plus when you see things in sequence (vs re-runs) they play alot better.

Well.. I only have 2 TV shows on DVD, Married.. with Children and King of the Hill. I've re-watched them a lot. They're both also excellent as background viewing. Sci-Fi and drama I just couldn't see as either.

I only buy a tv series on DVD if it's one of my favorites. So far, all the TV shows on DVD that I have, are replacements for what I taped off the TV before such a beast as tv-on-dvd was even thought of (Monkees from that 80s MTV marathon, Miami Vice, La Femme Nikita). I already know I will want to watch more than once because I have; they've stood the test of time.

I'd buy Friends or SATC or something I like, but not love, if I found it really cheap 2nd hand.

I like Friends, Seinfeld, and Scrubs. Very replayable.

regarding thrillers because you know how they end, you don't see replay value. then why do people rewatch usual suspects or se7en?

If you question why would you want to watch a TV show again, isn't it the same as why would anyone watch a movie again? TV is really no different than movies except being shorter and more stories involving the same characters.

I'm an oddball because I tend to use a lot of TV on DVD for my classes. It's easier to get students to watch a 20 or 40 minute TV show than a 2 hour movie. So far I've subjected them to Sports Night, Alien Nation, West Wing, Buffy, Alias, and DS9. I've used some of those along with B5, X-Files and Highlander in my research.

On the personal side every year I try to watch several episodes from each of the series I collect.

Well, I find Family Guy, Simpsons, Futurama and Friends very re-watchable, plus the Sopranos. There are quite a few TV shows I've thought of buying, but i wonder if I'll ever watch them much.

Well, I didn't say that they weren't rewatchable, I just said, perhaps no so [much]. I was thinking of the series '24'. As that's the only thriller series I've got. And I've only got the first season so far, but I may be getting the other two shortly as Amazon is running a $20 off sale for when you buy two season sets.

Anyway..with '24', once you've seen a season, and know the ending, or the relevant plot twists and turns, is the replay value still there? Maybe. If you wanna play detective and try to find the seeds of each plot twist before they happen.


So far, the only series that I have nearly rewatched totally is Star Trek-TNG, with the exception to the 7th season. I must admit that I caught a lot more of the continuity references the second time around.

Once I finish up all my unwatched sets, I'm thinking about going back and rewatching either Babylon 5 or Stargate. Just today I finished up Dark Angel. Kick-ass series finale in "Freak Nation". I have 3 seasons of Xena (5th and 6th seasons) and Hercules (5th season) left and the final season of Highlander sitting on my back burner.

The problem is that I can't seem to find the time to watch these between the time I watch the news and surfing Internet porn. ;) :lol:

Surprisingly enough alot of the shows I buy on DVD are shows that I have already seen (like Buffy, Angel, Alias, DAwson's Creek, ER, Gilmore Girls, ETC.) But the reason I own the shows is because I really enjoy the characters and the story lines and Im always getting weird whims to rewatch shows. I am never more excited than when Im peeling the shrink wrap off an old favorite show to rediscovery (I was positivly giddy when I was unwraping "Popular Season One"). But I will admit that alot of shows that I bought as blind buys I won't watch more than once (Six Feet Under, Felicity, Dark Angel, etc (eventhough now that i've finished senior year of felicity i want to rewatch freshman year). Also shows like (Simpsons, Futurama, and Friends) I've stopped buying because I realize that I don't even watch them anymore because of all the reruns... I guess it depends on the person.

When I started buying tv on DVD (my first purchases in the category were the 2 volumes of Spin City episodes), I outlined 2 rules for myself: I would limit my purchases to the only shows I really, really care about. And 2, if I was going to get into a show, I would buy the entire series. Luckily a few of my purchases are only a few seasons long (Wacky Races is 1 set, Brak Show will be a total of 2, Rocky & Bullwinkle 5 I believe).

As of now though, by far I have got the most replay value from the first 3 seasons of Curb Your Enthusiasm, that show just keeps getting funnier and funnier. Other than CYE and the previously mentioned, the only other shows I'm buying are Seinfeld (my favorite show of all time), Chappelle's Show, and the Sealab 2021 and Aqua Teen Hunger Force sets. I've watched every season at least twice and have been very satisfied with my decisions.

the ones with extremely high replay value for me have been Friends, Sanford and Son, Brady Bunch......mostly sitcoms, although i do enjoy watching favorite episodes of Smallville and Buffy repeatedly as well.

I love the shows CSI and Law N Order, but they hold little replay value to me. They're like mini mysteries with not much personal drama going on in the cast. Once the shows over, it's over, and I rarely watch the re-runs on TV.

However, comedies I enjoy, such as Seinfield, Bewitched, and Roseanne - I can watch those episodes over and over again (and do.) They make great background noise too, something familar.

As for dramas, such as Smallville and The Shield, I own all of these. I go awhile between watching them, and when I do I watch in order. Soemtimes if a friend shows interest, as is happening now, we watch the shows together, so this makes it worth owning as well.

So, like everyone else, it depends on the show.
