let's look at the value part of the question. You purchase a 2 hour movie at $16, look at it as $8 an hour. Watch it twice and you are down to $4 an hour. 3 times, $2 an hour.

Now, look at a $30 tv set with 17 hours of entertainment. That is $1.75 per hour right off the bat without any repeat viewings. Of course most HBO sets would skew this way out of wack. ;) So technically there is more value watching a tv set, even if you only view it once.

As for just entertainment purposes, comedies will always have more replay value. They are shorter and easier to get into. Some drama exceptions to me are Band of Brothers and the X-files.

I own ALOT of TV-on-DVD, from 24 to X-Files, its really the only DVDs I regularly buy. Now I am in my room alot, and ALWAYS need background TV on, so the shows I usually put on...

I still laugh my ass off at these shows, I own a few dramas as well, but they dont have much replayability (Ive watched S1 & 2 of 24 twice, everything else just once)

Defintely a good value money wise when you look at it per hour.

I just can't bring myself to buy something I won't watch repeatedly, regardless of the monetary value.

That said, I only have 2 TV seasons on DVD now, Boomtown and Lost: S1. There's just not many shows I'd every watch more than once.

Yeah I wasn't really speaking costwise, when I started the thread way back when. I was just sure there was a lot of TV that is a once watch, instead of something you could watch over and over again, but from the looks of where this thread headed it all depends. Where I couldn't watch a drama (not including West Wing which is a dramedy IMO) over again, my sitcoms can get rewatched often.

I'd have to say a big yes on the replay value of TV on DVD. I have a fair amount and never tire of watching re-reuns of shows I've not seen in ages or even the new stuff that just hooked me-LOST! Right now I'm working through DS9(S4), Spooks S2, Law & Order SVU, Quincy S1, the soon to be released Rockford Files S1 & Munsters S2 and LOST. I actually think, that I watch more TV on DVD than movies now!

I figured, but I thought it was an angle that most people overlook. I, myself, am down to only buying TV on dvd. I just don't watch movies anymore. With a little one running around it is hard to set aside 2 solid hours. So it is a better value even if I only watch the show once.

Can the OP tell me why they singled out TV? There are many movies that I've only watched once and will never watch again. There are many TV shows that I've seen many times over. Hell, I've watched most of the Adult Swim stuff several times this year.

It's not the genre that dictates replay value, it's the individual preferences of the viewer.

Do what I do for TV on DVD: don't buy them for yourself, but drop hints to your wife/husband. My wife got me Buck Rogers and Battlestar Galactica (old) and I thoroughly enjoyed them. How many times will I watch them again? I don't know, but since it was a gift, it doesn't really matter.

p.s. - there's always <b>Netflix</b>, which we've used to watch: Highlander, Star Trek Original, Sex and the City, Sopranos, Simpsons, X-Files, etc.

I finished rewatching season II of 24, and completely enjoyed it. Alias will certainly have to be rewatched.

Viewed a year or 2 later it will be fresh enough to enjoy.

I pointed out TV, because even if the TV is good, there is a lot that I probably won't get around to watching again. However if a movie is good, it is short enough (relative to a season not an episode) that I can watch it with ease.

Yep. It's hard to get through a season. And I can't see myself every buying a season of a show that's relatively self-contained episodes (i.e. a sitcom).

I never even watch re-runs of those type of shows on TV, much less want to buy them over and over.

But movies, I can watch over and over if it's one I love, where even with a great show like Boomtown I'm just not going to watch it much.

For whatever reason, TV shows are just vastly inferior to movies IMO. i.e. my favorite episodes of my favorite shows rank well below my favorite movies.

I get a good amount of replay value on most of my sets. Shows like Curb Your Enthusiasm, Boomtown, hell, even the Saved By The Bell sets. I get more replay value out of my TV shows than my movies, because I can devote a half hour to my TV instead of 2 hours.
