I can agree with some of what you are saying, but all of those older films you mentioned are classics and if anything deserve to be higher on the list. I agree about some of the more recent films. I have seen many of them and have no interest in buying them on DVD. Most don't seem to me like they will hold up at all 10 years or more from now. Many of the recent Academy Awards Best Pictures like American Beauty had me shaking my head when I watched them. Good films yes, but really the best we had to offer for the entire year? The Academy really has a bad history of picking top films.

TylerDurden_73 03-13-05 05:02 PM

71...surprised I have that many

Cameron 03-13-05 05:10 PM

123...a few more not on dvd yet, that will be on my shelf soon...some in the next few weeks

Scott Connors 03-13-05 05:34 PM

95 on DVD, maybe 20 others that are still on VHS. For instance, I don't have KING KONG because I'm waiting for the remastered SE. There are maybe 30 more that are on my want list (HIS GIRL FRIDAY, SUNSET BLVD, THE BIG SLEEP, etc.)

natevines 03-13-05 06:05 PM

Exactly 90. Pretty proud of meself!

JWolff 03-13-05 06:19 PM

103 here.

ulanshad 03-13-05 07:03 PM

I have 35 of them (including The Incredibles and Eternal Sunshine... which are en route), of the 105 (film) titles I have (0 from the bottom 100).

thegame370 03-13-05 07:14 PM

Ive got 35 of em'

ROBERTCOP34 03-13-05 07:26 PM

I have 38 of them.
But some of the films on there list are not that great what gives?

What 'gives' is that great is subjective. There are a few films on there that I absolutely detest, but evidently many others love.

NatrlBornThrllr 03-13-05 07:37 PM

I don't know, I think they're all quality films...at least in respect to cinema on the whole. Place any title from the top-250 alongside a title from the bottom-100 for confirmation of this. But like "natevines" said, it's all subjective. The titles are voted on by guys and gals like you and I. Most people are fans of Mystic River and Million Dollar Baby. I wasn't too blown away by either. However, I can understand and accept their placement on the list because I'm well aware that I'm in the minority with my unfavorable impression of them.

I have 31 of the DVDs, but I find the list to be silly. To many current movies, not enough classics nearer the top.

By my count, close to 60% of the films on the list were made before 1980.

X 03-13-05 08:10 PM

I don't have 54 of them, plus or minus a couple from eyeballing the list.

Several aren't out yet so it's kind of hard to own them.

DumDum 03-13-05 08:37 PM

81...with some on order.

I like the idea of averaging the collection, Quake!

As for me… I have 100 out of 217, giving me an average of 46%, and I never consciously sought IMDB for advice as to what title to get, unlike some people I know.

217? do u mean out of 250?

twikoff 03-14-05 06:51 AM

out of 217 is the 46% that he mentioned
only 40% out of 250 (assuming he stopped counting at #217, because he didnt have any of the final 33)... cant really manipulate the percentages by stopping counting at the last one you have.. Otherwise, someone that only had the first one.. could say 100% ;)

OK, maybe "really horrible" was overstating it a bit, but below is a list of movies from the IMDb top 250 that IMO range from terrible to mediocre:

Memento
The Matrix
Requiem For a Dream
Kill Bill Vol 1
Kill Bill Vol 2
The Sixth Sense
Cinema Paradiso
Terminator 2
Run Lola Run
Return of the Jedi
Talk To Her
Lost in Translation
Being John Malkovich
21 Grams
Garden State

I was suprised to find that I have 49 of them. Several are on my to get list. Not a bad list if you like arbitrary lists developed by someone else.

AndyA 03-14-05 08:10 AM

202 I had no idea i had that many
All the top 50
93 out of the top 100
Only own 1 in bottom 100

Wow - I have 148 of those! (It would be a bit higher, but there are a few titles that haven't appeared on DVD yet!)

Terrible to Mediocre? The Sixth Sense was a rare Hollywood "intelligent" suspense/horror film (though Unbreakable has more rewatch value IMO) T2 is a superb action blockbuster, Matrix is also a very good intelligent action film (much better than the sequels). :)
I agree I was also scratching my head at KB1 and 2 but even they were good fun. :)

"I disapprove of what you say but I defend to the death your right to say it"
(Voltaire).

The chart works better if you take it as a snapshot of movies people find entertaining in the here and now. I don't agree with some of the choices but resepct them ;)
As you said wendersfan its just your opinion which is OK :)

brooke789 03-14-05 08:56 AM

69 and I saw about 15-20 others that I will probably get at some point.

I currently only have one from the bottom 100 (Robocop 3), but may up that number soon with the addition of Superman IV. I'm a sucker for completing series.
