Crappy DVD Packaging
Okay, so we've already covered slipcovers (no pun intended), so now i want to discuss what you guys think is some of the worst DVD packaging out there. Don't be nice, either.
Mine: Clerks: Uncensored (fat) Dogma: Special Edition (fat) |
fuck yeah i agree 100% on both those.
|
I actually like the "fat" double disc cases.
|
total recall in the circular tin case.
|
y? the fat cases just take up added space and are a bitch on the discs themselves.
|
no one has chimed in with the evils of snapper yet...
i like the double cases.... what i don't like is the box sets that stack disc on each other like pink panther, or fresh prince... |
yeah, i hate those.
and snappers are just too annoying to even think of |
I think the doubles are cool, but i dont like how theres only one insert... they need two
|
JFK thats in a snapper, they put the second disc in a sleeve.
|
I like the Alphas which I think is what the "fat" double disk cases are called. I disliked the snappers, because the cardboard is too easily damaged.
|
i hate snappers... they dont fit or look right on my self.
|
Legend: The Ultimate Edition.
It's a very flimsy package and mine just broke last week. I'm still waiting for Universal to respond so I can get a new one. Also, the slipcase for The Crying Game. When I slowly removed the FYE stickes from it, they peeled some of the paint off. |
I've got stands that have 14 cubby holes, each of which hold 8 DVD's. Therefore, those "double-disk cases" are a problem. They make for a really tight fit in the cubby holes, and when you think about it, they're really not needed. There are regular-sized cases out there that are capable of holding more than one disc (see: Scorsese's Cape Fear, A Beautiful Mind, The new Donnie Darko Director's Cut, Finding Nemo, Gangs of NY, I could go on and on). So yeah, I dislike the thicker 2-disc cases simply because they make for a tight fit on my stands, and they're wholly unnecessary.
Snappers are just too cheap. Since they're made out of cardboard, the covers are much more susceptible to damage than other cases. Then there's the fact that they just stick out further on shelves than regular amaray cases do (though this doesn't bother me as much, because the same can be said for 2-disc SE's like Casablanca, Citizen Kane, Amelie, etc). Um, the new Scorsese boxed set, the Band of Brothers set, and the GBA S.E. are all too tall to fit into my cubby holes, so that's a touch annoying. I like the case design, I just wish they were able to make them the same height as a regular DVD/boxed set. The Mystic River 3-disc set has a cool looking layout (with one disc halfway over the top of the other), but practically, I don't think that's a good idea. I'm sure there are others, but I'm tired of typing. ;) -JP |
Snappers suck, I hate (single) Alphas but tolerate the double Alphas (I'm guessing that's the "fat case") since that's what Criterion and a few others tend to use from time to time... OUATITW and the Fox 5 Stars come to mind.
But the worst keepcase on the market is this thing > http://www.math.ttu.edu/~kesinger/dvd/spiny.2.jpg < Not sure what brand they are but the hub sucks major ass. I call it the "Universal claw of death" (I've only seen them come with Universal releases). You pretty much have to break one of the hub tabs to get the DVD out. Fine by me since I replace every non-Amaray style keepcase with an Amary, but I still despise that case. Title specific packaging that I don't really care for... Day Of The Dead SE (the velcro folding cover), Schindler's List (the book design and that collector's set is even worse), The Good, The Bad and The Ugly SE (too big). I'm also not too fond of music DVDs that come in CD jewel cases. |
same all around ^
|
All of the FOX 2-disc Special Editions ie Alien 1-4, Predator. The cardboard is usually damaged in store and the plastic holders on the inside come off way too easily. Give me a double disc slim amaray style case instead.
|
E.T. Limited Collector's Edition has the worst packaging I've ever seen, for one thing, there's no label on the spine. It's also very flimsy.
|
i do like digis, but for things that are only two discs, theres no point in not using amaray. Unless its a t.v. show, in which the extra packaging space is used for episode summaries.

Oh, I totally forgot about E.T. I love that movie, I have ever since my childhood, but I refuse to buy it until it gets some sort of re-release. No spine information, and as I recall, there's not even a "slipcover" to hold the book-like case closed. Yeah, definitely a thumbs down for that release.

"Malcolm X" SE...the slipcase is shorter than the DVD case...that irks me.
Just got the "Heat" SE and it too has a (albeit a very nice looking metallic finish with raised lettering) slipcase that is too damn short for the DVD case. Why would studios do this????? |
R1 packaging sucks period compared to some other regions. Anyone who has ever bought Korean or Japanese DVD's knows what I'm talking about. :)
|
about Malcolm X, same goes for Heat: SE. But HEAT still rocks ur mother. Hard. :johnwoo:
And about those 'claws of death', i've seen other cases like that. The one i hate the most is the Anchorman keepcase. At least, the one i got. The disc doesn't stay on the hub, so the disc would roll around in there till i swaped the case with one of my parents movies. |
UPDATE: Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence has a peice of shit cover

dude, japan kicks our ass every week...
|
Worst ever packaging for me:
Pearl Harbor Vista Series - not only does it not protect the disks but it goes out of its way to scratch them to hell The Evil Dead: The Book of the Dead: Limited Edition Rubber Book version - Ditto It doesn't get much worse than those two. You can say what you like about packaging being fat, thin, or whatever, but if you can't actually use the packaging, then you're on to a loser. |

Anyway, how about that Curb Your Enthusiasm: Season 1 box? It's like they intentionally set out to come up with some off-the-wall box design that no one had ever thought of before just for the sake of doing it. I've had people come over and almost tear it in half just trying to figure out how it opened (and I'll admit it took me a few seconds as well). |
|
Are digipacks those super-thin ones that are often used in cheap TV series box sets? If so, I *hate* those, as the hub has *no* teeth on it - or anything else toi hold the discs in, and so and DVDs are constantly falling out.
See the Popular and Keen Eddie box sets for examples. |
Snappers, Hate them,
But the worst thing I hate is the way that FOX puts the shrinkwrap on their cases, everytime I open one the glue residue and the shrinkwrap seems stuck to the spine and it won't come off, ruins the case. |
The only cases I've run across so far that I hate are the snappers, but even they aren't so bad as long as you keep tham all together on your shelf. As far as everything else, I actually prefer the wider packs such as Clerks, Dogma, so on, they look nicer on the shelf then the regular amaray cases, and they are special editions so they should look nicer. Also, Band of Brothers has one of the coolest cases ever, who cares if it is slightly taller than a standard dvd case. If you are having so many problems fitting these on your shelf then you have a crappy shelving system and need to look into changing that, not complaining about the best packaging dvd's come in!

"Battle Royale" Starmax was very ordinary. the "Kill Bill vol. 1" Japan LE is very cool though.
1. Asians go nuts for packaking of any kind, not only DVD packaging. 2. Offering a more attractive product helps fight piracy, which is rampant in Asia. |
I'm mixed on these...
Total Recall circular tin: yeah it's odd, but has a cardboard stand to stack it like a mornal DVD cover Good/Bad/Ugly: If it wasn't so damn tall, this packaging would ROCK, they treated this movie very well. E.T. again the no-spine part sucks, but the see through front w/ the DVD full-moon art is awesome. So if you guys had it your way, would everything come in a dull amary case, no special packaging?? I guess I'm different in that respect, I just got in the R2 UK hellraiser cube because I thought it was cool. Anyone got a large cyclon-head BSG season set that "they hate", I'll take it off your hands! |

I'm with you. I'm not a fan at all of thin packs and would prefer digipacks to those anyday. By the way, examples of digipacks are "Friends," "Fresh Prince," "The West Wing," "Will and Grace," "All in the Family" and many, many others -- even the new 4 disc set of "Gone With the Wind." |
I hate the packaging for all of the HBO programs that I own. Sopranos, Six Feet Under, Mr. Show, Band of Brothers. They are all awful. Regular Thinpaks in a sturdy outerbox is good enough for me.

This topic has been beat to death....try a search next time. I really have no problem with pakaging....nothing to invest time with as far as making an effort to complain. Most of my titles are sealed in protective sleeves so damage is something that just does not happen with my library. If it did, I'd be the first to bitch about it, trust me. Now when someone glances over my library here at my home....many will ask how I can stand those big bulky cases for X-Rated Kult Video dvds. Because they feature some of the best art ever? Yes!:D |
