It is exactly like mifuneral said. They are trying to make it edgier looking, and in doing that IMO they have lost the style that the original covers had, and which reflected perfectly on the show.

Personally, for me the new cover doesn't seem to lose any style just by removing the silhouette of the giant face. It still fits the show perfectly to me.
EDIT: Also, it looks like the case inside the slipcover matches the art for the original case, from the side in the picture that was linked.
